Nepali students threatening to burn themselves over fuel price hike

Ten students were arrested on friday the 27th outside the Nepal Oil Corporation. They include Sachit Nagela, Bishu Thapa and Arpit Poudel.

They had set January 28, 10 am as deadline to immolate themselves, along with the national flag.

The protest was over the fuel price hike that the government of Nepal tends to increase every other year or so.

Until now there was no significant protest like this where the students threatened to burn themselves over a cause. It will create a great pressure over the government of Nepal whether to increase the price or not.

It is good to see that the students of different political groups protesting against the common problem of the people instead of fighting for their parent political group. Looks like the new generation is not going to be the same as the ones that are ruling the country now and will definitely bring some peace and stability to the country after all.

Earthquake in Nepal, September 18.

Everything was moving when earthquake hit Nepal on September 18th. It was 6:30pm when the quake was experienced and strong tremors were felt in many regions of the nation. The epicenter (the main point where the quake started) of the earthquake is said to be Sikkim, India -The eastern boundry of Nepal- and it had a magnitude of 6.9 M_w there. In Sikkim, it was large enough to produce cracks in some buildings and disconnect telephone lines and power supply. However, most regions in Nepal experienced the quake with much lower magnitude. In Kathmandu the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8. M_w.

6 deaths in Nepal have been confirmed and more than 160 were injured. In Kathmandu, there were a few cases where some walls and poles were destroyed by the shock. The wall of British Embassy was completely destroyed and 3 people died and many others were injured. There were many more cases of injuries in Kathmandu. The effect of earthquake was more serious in the eastern region of the country, which was closer to the epicenter. Powercuts have been experienced in some regions of Sunsari and many injures have been confirmed. 2 people died in Dharan.

Everyone should note that many aftershocks may strike hours or even months after the first shock was experienced. The aftershock can have either greater magnitude or lower magnitude. 12 aftershocks have already been recorded but they were much smaller than first shock. Among them, two aftershocks had magnitude of 4.8 richter. Experts claim that there is very slim chance of another large shock.

Nepal Fifa Ranking Top in South Asia

Nepal is now ranked 136 in Fifa ranking (as updated on date 27 July 2011). Nepal is above Indonesia 137 and below Yemen 135. With the new ranking Nepal, climbing up 12 places, leads South Asian Region followed by Bangladesh at 147. India is ranked third after losing 6 places to 153 rank.

The new ranking was based on the 3 international matches when Nepal qualified to the second round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the first time in its history. Although Nepal lost against Jordan with a huge margin, it was able to defeat East Timor 2-1 and 5-0 in two legs of the first round of 2014 World Cup Asian zone qualifying matches.

This is the second best Fifa ranking of Nepal in the football history. The best was 124 on Dec 1993 - Feb 1994. The Lowest Fifa ranking of Nepal was 188 on Feb 2008.

The program was organized by Everest Fashion Home and Nepal Tamang Kala Sanskriti Kendra. First runner up went to Kriti Ghising Tamang and second runner up to Sarah Ghising Tamang.

The winner of the Fourth Miss Tamang Beauty Contest, Rogina, received Rs. 25,000 in cash, crown, and various gifts. Rogina, grade 12 student in management, was also awarded the Miss Photogenic title. First runner up, Kriti and second runner up, Sarah, received Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 in cash respectively along with crown and trophy.

From folk songs to modern songs her modelling is very famous.Her carrier in a media took a start from a music video titled "Kasari" by Migma Sherpa directed by Prasanna poudel. However her first Tv appearance was on a commercial for Closeup Toothpaste. She even modelled for Anju Panta's song Jindagi Yo PhulaiPhul Ko at 103 degree fever.

Nepal 2014 World Cup Qualifiers

Nepal won East Timor (2-1) in the first leg of the 2014 Brazil World cup qualifiers on June 29, Wednesday in Dashrath Stadium.

It was raining and the match was quite intersting too. Bharat Khawas who was playing his Sixth international match for nepal got a Red Card after getting two yellow cards, the second for diving inside penalty box. At that time the score was 1-1 and I had thought that the match would be a draw. Playing with just 10 players and with continuous raining Nepal put up a great fight against the East Timor.

Gratefully at 70th minute Jumanu Rai Scored the 2nd goal to make his home team win by 2-1.

Now the second leg of the match will be played on July 2, Saturday on 15:30 Nepal Standard Time.
East Timor Fifa Ranking is 200 and Nepal is 148.
Some day we hope we see Nepali in the World Cup Finals.

Tampered LPG cylinder on Nepali Market

Around 400,000 tampered liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders are in circulation in the market posing a high risk of leakage and explosion, said the Gas Dealers Federation Nepal (GDFN) on Friday.

Following the government’s decision to take action against Tara Gas and Sugam Gas for illegally modifying LPG cylinders, the GDFN said that the government had failed to monitor many of the bottling companies that are circulating such cylinders.

Gas traders blamed Nepal Oil Corporation for issuing licenses to bottling companies haphazardly. The country’s monthly LPG requirement amounts to 15,000 tons while there are over 41 bottling companies dealing in the fuel. Although the requirement could be handled by some two dozen companies, licenses have been distributed recklessly.

“Many new companies are in the process of getting licenses,” said GDFN president Gyaneshwor Aryal at a programme on Friday.

Changing the foot and neck rings of the cylinders and imprinting the name and logo of one’s company is creating a serious threat to the people, said Sita Ram Joshi, director general at the Nepal Bureau of Standard and Metrology. Aerotic, Nepal Cylinders and Griha Laxmi Metal Industries are the only three companies that have been granted a license to manufacture LPG cylinders in the country. Joshi said a majority of bottling companies need to upgrade their production and processing method through modern technology.

An LPG cylinder has an average lifespan of 10 years. Bottling companies are required to carry out a hydrostatic test on their cylinders every five years. The test involves checking the cylinder’s valve and removing the residue that has collected inside it. “However, a number of companies have not been following the process,” said GDFN secretary Chandra Thapa.

Anuja Baniya faked it all

Anuja Baniya was praised everywhere for the news about her returned a bag containing Rs. 9.1 million and a diamond necklace to the owner on April 9. This news was initiated by Kantipur and was covered in a number of newspapers. Even the President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav called Baniya to appreciate her deed.

But on Friday, a question aroused on the veracity of the story when Baniya requested Kathmandu Police to find out number of Poudel and then, Poudel. Baniya says the number was deleted from her mobile.

The photo on the newspaper itself was a fake. Anuja is the one on the left whereas the photo on the right is that of her friend Mamata Adhikari

Kumar Baniya, cousin of Anuja, said he cannot believe Anuja has found money and returned it.

The President´s Office has asked Morang Chief District Officer to cross-check to find out the truth behind the incident,” the source added.

The source said Morang´s CDO has transferred the responsibility to Sunsari´s CDO Ram Prasad Thapaliya saying the matter did not fall under his jurisdiction.

Baniya claimed that she indeed found the bag and returned it to its owner. She has appealed Poudel to come in front of public.

Poudel is said to have withdrawn the sum from IME, Itahari, and traveled to Dharan to purchase land for his daughter. However, IME Itahari´s manager Darshan Shrestha, said the branch has not released such sum since April 2.

UPDATE: Kantipur has told that the news was incorrect and has apologized for the mistake.

SLC is there and the Nepal government has reduced the load shedding by only 2 hours! What a joke! How will the students will prepare for there SLC starting from Thursday, March 24, 2011.

Its a same to the Nepal Government to not give electricity even in the SLC examination which is known as the 'Iron Gate' and valued most by students and parents alike.

And this time around the SLC exam was supposed to be 'cheat free exam'. Government had also made the announcement that they would fine upto 1 Lakh for cheating. But the policy has not been implemented. Somewhere they found 2 sacks full of cheats.

Founder of Nepali Congress Krishna prasad bhattarai dies

The former prime minister and the founding leader of Nepali Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, has passed away at the age of 87. Battarai, popularly known as ‘Kishunji’ or ‘KP,’ passed away at 11.26 pm on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Norvic Hospital in Kathmandu. The doctors had previously informed that the condition of Bhattarai was not improving. According to the attending doctors, he died of multiple-organ failures.

After death, Bhattarai’s body was taken back to his home, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Ashram in Badegaun.

College representative Anil Bajracharya said the battery invented by the students was cheaper than those of various companies in the market.

In Nepal a prototype of the device has received a glowing response.At the moment the technology is only equipped to produce light through solar energy, but a mark II of the design — one that will provide the energy to power other electrical appliances such as laptops and mobile phones — is currently under development.

The Munro is connected to a series of small solar panels. With a full charge it can power a "string" of 25 LEDs for 17 hours and 50 LEDs for eight hours.It is capable of producing 24 watts of electricity, greatly out-performing similar products on the market, and may prove to be as significant as the wind-up radio developed by Trevor Baylis.

The Munro was developed by joint initiative — the Skills for Employability project — between colleges in the UK and Nepal.

Funded by the British Council, the project involves the Balaju School of Engineering and Technology, Bharatpur and Trade School, Nuwakot, as well as Dundee College, which have all worked closely together since 2008 to develop technical and vocational skill training for students.

The patent of the technology of Munro is with the Balaju School of Engineering and Technology. It is now in their hands to ensure the device is manufactured and distributed to those who need it most.

Sick City, a breakthrough for Nepali films

In Bollywood, it was Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” that brought out the gritty images of Mumbai’s slums to the audience; in Nepal, we now have Murray Kerr’s “Sick City” scripted, directed, edited and produced by England-born Murray Kerr.

Kathmandu gets a unique exposure through Kerr’s eyes. Poverty, sex and drugs rule its tourist hub – Thamel. And Krishna, the protagonist in the film, enacted by Arpan Thapa, is a petty hustler who gambles with his life.

The film is shot in Basantapur and Thamel areas of kathmandu. Krishna, the character by Arpan Thapa, lives in the attic of a rundown house, his ambition is to make it big in life; but when his dreams for a prosperous life collide in a night, it makes for a captivating tale.

The director has infused life into Krishna’s character. And Arpan Thapa dons on the role of Krishna both in mind and body. He has superbly transformed himself into Krishna. His gait and dialogue delivery can only be applauded.

From Maya, Krishna’s wife, to the solemn rickshaw pullers in the film, everything is realistic. The director has molded himself into the film. He has not made the film for others but for himself. At KC’s shop, the radio plays songs of Narayan Gopal and Deep Shrestha. Kerr is a fan of both Gopal and Shrestha.

The film is a breakthrough in numerous ways. It is an eye opener for all the so-called Nepali film directors, Nepali film enthusiasts and wannabe Nepali filmmakers. It is so not only because of the strong script and crisp editing but for the milepost it has created in the history of Nepali filmmaking. This is a film that has come out of Kathmandu, the power centre of the nation and the Nepali film industry. Amazingly, it does stand out.

Sick City does not have the natural diversity of Mustang or Jomsom or the escapism that is enrobed in each Nepali commercial film. It has a sensitivity that is hard to deny. It is the story of a city – our very own Kathmandu. Manu, Laxmi, Maya, and Krishna are all struggling in this city that only eats on their souls. If one must move ahead in life, as fate unfolds, the others must be sacrificed.

Tiny hopeful moments, however, sparkle in between the scenes, and so do regret and crime. Though the film ends in tragedy, it, among other things, gives hope to all Nepali youngsters who aspire to work behind the camera. It proves that there are stories hidden in every nook and corner of Kathmandu, they are just waiting to be told and unfolded.

Epl player Graham Roberts to coach nepal

All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) appointed English coach Graham Roberts as the new coach for Nepali national football team.

According to an ANFA source, Roberts will look after Nepali team in the upcoming AFC Challenge Cup Group stage matches scheduled to be held in Kathmandu from the second week of April. Roberts has arrived Kathmandu on Friday.

ANFA had appointed Upendra Man Singh and Megh Raj KC in the coaching panel for the national team under the leadership of Krishna Thapa early in January. ANFA has called in 48 players nominated by Thapa for the closed camp training.

The ANFA source claimed that Thapa would also be in the new coaching team under the leadership of Roberts. "Thapa will be there as a coaching staff. There will be four coaches for the national team preparing for the Challenge Cup," said the source.

ANFA has picked Roberts from among five foreign coaches interested for the job. According to the ANFA sources, Roberts will get a monthly salary of $5000 and $500 for his petty expenses.

The former English national team player was looking after Pakistan team recently. Roberts had joined Pakistan in 2010 as an assistant coach and later took full-fledged duty as the coach.

The 51-year old from Southampton had played for English Premier League clubs Tottenham and Chelsea (when they were in championship) and Scottish Club Rangers.

Roberts was the team member when Tottenham won the FA Cup titles in 1981 and 1982 as well as UEFA Cup in 1984. Roberts was a stubborn defender in the team but had scored against Anderlecht in the UEFA Cup final. He had won six caps for the England national team.

He was also in the Ranger´s squad that won Scottish League and League Cup titles in 1986. Likewise, he was an important member of Chelsea when they won the championship (2nd division) in 1988-89. He had ended his playing career with West Bromwich.

Roberts had started his coaching career with Scottish Club Clyde in 2005. Clyde had defeated giant Celtic under his coaching but later in 2006 Clyde had sacked him.

DSP Kanchan Thapa dies

One day after Deputy Superintendent of Police Kanchan Thapa reportedly shot himself dead with his service pistol at a house in Srijantole of Basundhara, police have arrested seven persons to establish why he took the extreme step.

DSP Deepak Thapa said Khop Kumari Adhikari alias Shweta (25) and her elder sister Subhadra Adhikari (34) of Rasuwa, Phurba Tamang (37) of Sindhupalchowk, Kanchha Tamang (30) of Nuwakot, and Rabin Adhikari (44), Bimal Koirala (21) and Tirtha Kafle (43) of Kathmandu were arrested. All of them were close to DSP Kanchan.

Shweta had rented the third floor of the house where the police officer was found dead in a pool of blood. He had been living together with her for the last 15 months, while his wife and son resided at a house in Dhumbarahi.

An investigating official informed that Kanchan was under mental pressure after he sold an apartment in Orient Colony, Dhumbarahi for Rs 7.5 million and invested Rs 5 million in a business firm run by Rabin, Bimal and Tirtha. During interrogation, Shweta claimed she was married to DSP Kanchan and they were living as a couple. But she failed to produce evidence to support the claim. She was in the house when he was found dead.

“The family continued to pressurise Kanchan to get the money back from them after he invested the cash in September 2010 for a period of one year,” said an investigating official. “The trio still had seven months to return the money with a share of the profit. The death of a money lender is really mysterious. Though primary investigation suggests suicide, it is still too early to confirm.”

Police have sent the automatic pistol used to National Forensic Science Laboratory to examine the finger print. Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office has formed a five-member probe panel led by SP Deb Bahadur Bohara to investigate the incident. The panel, which includes DSPs Kedar Dhakal, Deepak Thapa, Hridaya Thapa and Prabin Pokharel, has been given 35 days to submit its report.

Ganga Bahadur thapa the first Nepali Olympic Athlete passes away

Ganga Bahadur Thapa, the first Nepalese athlete to participate in the Olympics, breathed his last at the age of 84 on Tuesday. He died while undergoing treatment at Model Hospital in Kathmandu due to several health complications. He was reportedly suffering from high-blood pressure for a long time.

It is reported that Thapa’s body has been kept at the premises of the National Sports Council for final condolences.Thapa was the first sportsperson to mark the nation’s participation in the Olympics in 1964.

Rohit Timilsina´s dream of recording his name in the Guinness Book of World Records has finally materialized. Timilsina, 25, accomplished the feat of holding 21 lawn tennis balls in his single palm as per the International Tennis Federation standard. He, however, does not seem satisfied enough.

Timilsina, a school teacher by profession and also karate black belt had nurtured the unusual dream of recording his name in the Guinness book, since he was an eighth-grader. Ten years down the line, his persistence and perseverance finally paid off. “Though I started practicing the art only three years back, I have always dreamt of doing something new to keep a world record,” Timilsina told in personal interview at a function organized to reveal the recognition by Guinness Book.

Previously, a Frenchman Arnand Desch held the record by holding 19 balls in his palm for 10 seconds. Timilsina had publicly demonstrated his skills in June 14, 2008 at the Satdobato Lawn Tennis Court in the presence of various personalities -- lawn tennis official Surya Bhushan, Sarad Lama, Supreme Court register among others. His feat was recognized eight months later in January 2009.

“My name will be published in 2010/11 edition of the Guinness Book,” Timilsina said. In each edition, a hundred million Guinness books is published in 40 different languages. Timilsina, dance and the extra -curricular teacher at the North Valley and Third Eye Academy credits his family and teachers as his source of inspiration.

“While I was an eighth-grader, I thought about walking over the fire to set a world record. However, I abandoned the idea. Few years back, I broke 99 eggs in a minute with the help of my nails to hold a world record. Then I also attempted to break tube lights with my nails. But, later I learnt that to keep the record, it was necessary that I followed Guinness guidelines. With the help of People Face I learnt the guidelines and did it accordingly, he explained.

Timilsina, however, says that though he is happy with his achievements, he hasn´t let success get into his head. “I don´t want to remain complacent,” he said, adding, “Asrida Forman of America holds the highest four world record in his name. I am working to break that. Now, I am working to set new records with basketball, football, golf and fruit.”

On the occasion Timilsina flaunted his skill of spinning basketball in his thumb for few minutes and claimed that he could do that for as long as five minutes. “If the government supported me I could set more records,” he said. Most Nepalis have set world records in mountaineering. Pratiksha Bista is another Nepali to record her name in the Guinness book of world records for her memory power.

Worlds Oldest Mt. Everest Climber from Nepal set Guinness Record

A 77-year-old retired Nepali soldier has entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest man to have climbed Mount Everest.

Min Bahadur Sherchan who climbed the world's tallest peak in May last year at the age of 76 years beat the previous record of Japanese climber Yuichiro Miura, two years his junior.

"The oldest man to climb Mt Everest is Min Bahadur Sherchan (Nepal b. 20 June 1931) who reached the summit on 25 May 2008 at the age of 76 years 340 days," says the certificate handed by Guinness to Sherchan recently.

According to reports, documentary lapses led Guinness recognize Miura's claim as Sherchan had failed to complete the formalities needed. The Japanese had scaled the peak two days after Sherchan.

The Nepali climber was shocked when he came to know in February this year about Miura's claim to the record. Enquiries revealed that the documents he had couriered to the Guinness office were not sufficient and hence Miura's claim got recognized.

Sherchan had sent a copy of the recognition given by the Nepali government and a letter of appreciation by President Ram Baran Yadav. But he went to Guinness's London office this year and gave enough proof to stake his claim for the record.

"It's nice to get acknowledgement and recognition for the achievement which should rightfully have been mine in the first place," Sherchan told reporters at Kathmandu on Monday.

Miura who was the first person to ski down Mt. Everest in 1970 had set record for being the oldest to climb the peak in 2003 at the age of 70. His record was beaten by another Japanese Katsusuke Yanagisawa in 2007.

World’s youngest singer Nepalese girl Atithi K.C set Guinness World Record

Atithi Gautam KC, a three-year-old girl from Kathmandu, has cut a solo album of nine Nepali songs, including Nepal's national anthem "Sayau Thunga Fulka Hami Eutai Mala Nepali", and has set her sights on entering the Guinness Book of World Records.

Atithi recently gave a live performance, singing three songs from her album.

Orbit Publishers, Atithi's father's company and Ambar Gurung, a Nepalese musician, released the album.

Her elder sister Usna, and her father, Uddhav, who is a Nepali folk singer, accompanied her at the ceremony.

Although her age did not deter Atithi from cutting the solo album, the composer said it was difficult to work with the child on account of her age.

"There is a vast difference in working with a professional singer and a child singer. It was really difficult to work with Atithi, too," said Shyam Sharma, who composed the music for Atithi's album.

Her father has planned to register her name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

"Atithi started singing at the age of two. She got into the habit of imitating her sister, so we worked on the process to record her songs," said Uddhav KC.

Atithi has performed live on state-owned Nepal Television and radio stations in Nepal.

As far as i know Tito Satya was one of the first nepali teleserial that started the comedy genre to the monotonous nepali teleflim industry. Tito Satya series began it's show from 2003 and before it the only famous teleflim worthy of name was the Hijo Aja Ka Kura.

"Ghar ma jau shrimati ko tention, office ma hakim ko objection.. Bato ma traffic ko ragging, Cyber Jau computer ma hacking" , the song, that started the show, was more famous than some of the popular nepali pop songs. In a way Tito satya changed the way we nepalese felt about teleserial and the era of Comedy Show began then after.

The person behind the Tito Satya is Deepak Raj Giri. He is not only the main actor of the show but also script writer and director.Other casts are

Koirala was chosen by the public in an online poll that ran for eight weeks on CNN.com. The results were revealed by CNN's Anderson Cooper at the conclusion of the fourth annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute."

Team Nemesis, Nepal's first motorbike stunt team

Perhaps the moves of Team Nemesis was not as perfectly executed as in Hollywood flicks, but the enthusiasm and the effort of the stuntmen could not be denied or missed on the first-ever Nepal’s Motorbike Stunt Show at the Satdobato Swimming Complex on April 14 2010.

The 10 riders, all in the age group of 18-28 years, handled their bikes like a toy and not like the mean speed machines they are taken to be, executing several stunts wowing their spectators at the show organised by Team Nemesis in association with Yamaha.

Team manager Numchha Rai said, “We have organised this event with a view to correct the misunderstanding of the public about bike stunts,” adding that people still consider it as an off-track activity.

He said that the event being the first of its kind in Nepal will give an introduction to Nepali bike stunts and will also be instrumental in promoting the art of bike stunts in the country.

Wheelie — riding just on the back wheel, or Stoppie — riding on the front wheel and stopping — when such stunts were performed flawlessly, the crowd cheered wholeheartedly. Though it was a tough job, all the riders carried off breathtaking stunts like Christ, Lazy Boy, Compass, Sharp cornering and Landslidings, as if these were mere child’s play.

Team captain Tsering Phuntsok Thakuri aka Smokiee said, “We are excited and encouraged by the overwhelming number of audience.”

Asked about the legalisation of the such a ‘game’ he said, “Like many other games, Bike Stunts is also a game, so, with the management of every required legal provision, it should be legalised,” adding that they are going to establish the game as an adventure sports under the Nepal Automobile Sports Association to make it professional and take it from the national to international level.

He also urged youngsters not to try the stunts without wearing safety gear and proper and professional guidance.

Medical and technical teams were present at the event for

Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal was finally recognized as world's smallest man on October 14th 2010 on his 18th birthday. What would be a better gift for his birthday than the Guiness World Record! 67.08 cm(26.41 inch) tall and weighing just 5.5 kg Khagendra won the Record displacing the former guiness world record holder, Edward Nino Hernandez of columbia, who measures 70 cm.

Born on October 14, 1992 in Dhullubaskot-6 of Baglung district as the eldest son of Roop Bahadur and Dhan Maya, Khagendra completed 17 years of age last year and got his Nepali citizenship certificate.

Khagendra has been previously recognized by Ripley's Believe It or Not for years as the smallest person known to exist over the age of 2. The Nepal government has already appointed Khagendra a goodwill ambassador for the Tourism Year 2011 after widespread discussions.

His news started spreading in Nepal after he was shown in the program Kantipur Aja on Kantipur Television.
Now he has already become a television star after he started acting in "Jhyai Kuti Jhyai" a nepali teleserial.

By adding comedy to awareness issues they have always guided the viewers to the positive and more aware path. We very much appreciate suce awareness raising advertisement from such famous national personalities.

But what about the Dish Nepal Add?
Is it good for such people to act on such commercial advertisment, that also very unreal? I don't believe that after keeping Dish Nepal in my tv, i will see bullets coming out of the tv or will ever feel like it. Even in 3D tv we cant get such visual experience as it is shown on the Dish Nepal advertisment. I feel very sorry for the Maha Jodi for commercializing themselves in such false and unreal advertisment. I don't blame Dish Nepal for they new have brought DTH technology in nepal but such false and unreal advertisement to gain popularity among viewers and get them subscribe for their service is not ethical and fair.

Himalayan Sherpa Club On verge of Creating history

High-flying Himalayan Sherpa Club (HSC) defeated 10-man Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club 2-1 to set the San Miguel Knockout Football Tournament championship clash with New Road Team (NRT) here at the Dasharath Stadium today.

Jaggajit Shrestha and Som Bahadur Malla scored to steer HSC to the final, while substitute Deepak Khadka pulled back one for the youngest departmental team. HSC, playing their first top tier tournament since the club’s formation a few years earlier, also stunned another departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) 1-0 to make it to the semi-finals.

Himalayan Sherpa coach Upendra Man Singh praised the way his players performed in the match. “The result is the outcome of our players’ efforts and a sound management of the club,” said the former Nepali national team goalkeeper and skipper. “Hard work during training and a passion to win has been major factor in my boys’ excellent run in the tournament,” added Singh.

APF assistant coach Janak Singh blamed the biased referring for their loss. “The referee at least should have given warning before he booked Sinkeman, who has already shown

a yellow in the 15th minute,” said Singh. Singh also added that they lost their rhythm after the break.

Both the teams squandered quite a few scoring chances in the match. APF custodian Rajbhandari brilliantly punched a 35-yard free-kick from Deepak Rai in the 17th minute. HSC shot-stopper Rupak Shrestha — who was sacked by Friends Club over the doubts that the player had thrown a match in the Martyrs Memorial San Miguel A Division League — judged well to block a Lawoti strike in the 37th minute.

With 1-0 down, striker Lawoti missed on a chance to level the scores for APF in the 56th minute, his shot failing to beat HSC keeper Rupak in one-on-one encounter.

Sushil Koirala is Nepali Congress new president

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress acting president Sushil Koirala has won the election for the party president post. In the vote count that concluded in the wee hours of Wednesday morning at the Academy Hall in Kamaladi, the incumbent acting president of the party secured more than 50 percent votes to win the top post of the country's largest democratic party.

He polled 1692 votes while his closest rival Sher Bahadur Deuba could garner 1317 votes only. Koirala maintained a distinct lead over Deuba in the vote count from the beginning.

On the other hand, Bhim Bahadur Tamang, the third candidate, polled meagre 78 votes.

Out of 3,088 National General Convention representatives of the party, 3,037 cast their votes for three key positions and 61 members in the party’s Central Working Committee.

According to the party statute, a presidential candidate has to secure more than 50 percent votes to be elected. Otherwise, the runoff would be held between the top two contenders.

The vote count was delayed by hours due to differences over the code of conduct and the process of counting among the party's election commission and the representatives of the presidential hopefuls. It counting began at 11:45 p.m. in the Academy Hall in Kamaladi

The NC had held the elections to elect new leadership along with the new Central Working Committee in Kathmandu on the last day of its 12th National General Convention.

Earlier, the party's election commission had decided to count votes for the president's post at 8 p.m. while the sealed ballot boxes of the other posts have been ferried to the party’s central office in Sanepa.

The vote count of other posts will be conducted on Wednesday

Nepali Designer Prabal Gurung tastes US success

NEW YORK — As cliches go, designer Prabal Gurung is the first to say he’s living the American dream: Kid from Nepal is now dressing first lady Michelle Obama on a regular basis.

Top fashion magazines heap praise on his work, celebrities call to borrow dresses, orders are flowing and surely his runway show next month at New York Fashion Week will be one of the hot tickets.

Yeah, Gurung says, life is good.

He takes issue, however, with being called an overnight success. Gurung has been sketching since he was a young boy and left Nepal for India to work as an apprentice, and then went to Australia and London assisting stylists. He flew clear across the world — alone — to land in New York, a place he’d never been before, attended Parsons The New School for Design, interned at Donna Karan and worked for Cynthia Rowley all before getting his big break as design director at Bill Blass.

Last fall marked his first formal collection presentation for editors, retailers and stylists under his own label, and he staged his first runway show in February.

“For 10 years, I’ve paid my dues, but everything has just now fallen into place,” he says.

Not that he’s unappreciative. During a recent interview, Gurung several times talked about the generosity of an industry that too often gets a bad rap for being cutthroat. As he gains success, he pledges to share his knowledge with even younger designers — he won’t give his age, only saying he’s “young enough” — and to try to keep busy the struggling old-school artisans who can do with feathers, beads and bows things that a machine can’t.

He applauds the work ethic he has found in the U.S. “I’m not a believer of luck. I think opportunity and hard work becomes luck.”

OK, well, he’ll allow one lucky thing: He tasted bacon for the first time within the first few days of his arrival in Manhattan. Now he’s hooked, joking it’s the one thing he probably couldn’t live without.

But what pushed him here in the first place? Bergdorf Goodman couldn’t be the end goal of too many young Singapore-born boys growing up in Nepal.

Oprah Winfrey made him do it.

“I was toying with doing something big like coming to New York. I watched `Oprah.’ I didn’t know who she was, but the show was about living your dream. I decided if it was going to be a mistake to come to New York and try and make a career in fashion, then it was going to be my mistake. … But the American dream is real. I’m living it. ”

Gurung has thought about fashion for as long as he can remember. Sketching gave him peace, when, as a student at an all-boy Catholic school, he realized he wasn’t into all the games, sports and interests of his peers. He loved to watch his mother get ready for an evening out. He loves the ritual that women go through to get dressed, he says. “Women are so complex and layered. I’m fascinated by the colors they wear and how they’ll be transformed in clothes.”

He adds, “There is one universal truth: All women, all over the world, want to look beautiful. That is always the theme of my designs.”

Men, he says, stealing a quick glance at his own button-down shirt and jeans, aren’t nearly as interested.

Jindabaad | Finally a Nepali Band That Rocks

Jindabaad!!! This band is hailed in their music network for living up to this rather radical name. Made up of members of bands like Atomic Bush and Karmavalanche these guys have been there
since the birth and progression of the Nepali underground scene.

Their musical history, individually, is tied with groups categorised strictly under heavy-metal but now wish not to be stereotyped as that. "The whole point of us coming together as a band is to free ourselves from such labels," says Rohit Shakya, vocalist of the band. He adds, "Yes, we do stay true to the kind of music we grew up with, but you will find that our music often has an abstract, mellow edge to it." Thus they prefer the more flexible category 'art rock', as the freedom to go by a mixed genre of music, they claim, brings out the best in a band.

But this band is not just big talk, as they say themselves. They actually have a strongly devoted fan base that follow them and hang on to each and every sound they make. So why not go commercial? It would only increase the already burgeoning popularity they have been able to garner for themselves. But the band isn't avoiding the commercial scene because they want to stay put to the image they've created for themselves. They seem to have viable reasons, says Sunny Tuladhar, guirarist, "The commercial scene in Nepal is low in quality. Not that it lacks talent, just that there is a lack of filtering of the products that are generated."

So mainstreaming is no option for Jindabaad, but they seem to be content with the directionless path they tread on. "In the end it all comes down to making music that will stir our listeners and even more important is that we enjoy what we do. If we could have it our way, all we would do is find a hide-away and just play," says Sunny.

sabdamala a site which teaches nepali

A website which intends to teach Nepali children born in the United States to read and write the Nepali language, has been launched.

The creator of the free website sabdamala.com, Shailesh Ghimire, said that although his intention had been to help children learn Nepali, the website would benefit everyone. He added that he considered it a major tragedy that while many parents abroad teach their children to speak Nepali, the written language is grossly neglected and that he had decided to design the course to rectify the situation.

Sabdamala.com has an online video series, complete with homework assignments and lesson plans, and is free to anyone who signs up. It currently has 20 lessons plans, each lesson plan covering two letters, and 20 homework assignments to go with each lesson plan.

All the videos are in English, so that they are relevant to children who are unfamiliar with spoken Nepali.

Nuclear research center in Nepal Coming Soon!

The Ministry of Science and Technology has started an initiative to establish separate research centres for nuclear power and space science. It has forwarded a proposal to the National Planning Commission demanding Rs. 6 million to set up primary infrastructure for the centres.

The step follows the visit of the then-International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Mohamed Elbaradei in September last year. Elbaradei had discussed nuclear issues and areas of cooperation with the Nepali authorities during his visit.

In October, IAEA’s Fact Finding Mission visited Kathmandu and urged the government to formulate necessary laws and establish an atomic energy commission to deal with nuclear issues in the country.

Another IAEA team is set to visit Nepal in the last week of this month to acquire information about the government’s homework. The government is working out to prepare some proposals.

“We need heavy budget to set up centres that will carry out research on nuclear and space science,” said Hemant Arjyal, secretary at the ministry. “For now, we have demanded Rs. 6 million to set up a basic infrastructure for the centres.” According to him, the ministry is approaching international donor agencies to conduct nuclear research in the country.

Though Nepal became an IAEA member in August, 2008, it lacks the regulation and the legislation to oversee nuclear activities in the country.

“IAEA can assist Nepal in many areas of development like health, agriculture and energy if a nuclear research centre is set up,” said Arjyal. “We have demanded proposals from the Ministry of Health, Energy and Agriculture to identify the areas in which we can take assistance from it.”

The government plans to establish a national mechanism to deal with these issues which will include representatives from the Ministries of Health, Science, Agriculture and Energy.

Arjyal said that the establishment of a nuclear research centre could be helpful in dealing with nuclear issues, and said the space centre would provide opportunities to young Nepali scientists to learn about and carry out research on space science

Buddha pride of Nepal: So says Ramdev

Every time we hear something about buddha by the india (including movies and whatever), they always claim that buddha is from india. But Ramdev supported that he was from nepal.

Talking to media persons, Swami Ram Dev said, “There is no doubt that Buddha was born Nepal. Now he is a universal character.” Opposing the rumour about Buddha’s birth place being India, he said, “Any enlightened person is a dignity and pride of a nation,” adding, “I will campaign for Nepal if anyone says that Buddha was born in India,” he added.

That's a good news to all nepalese that at least some indians also say that buddha is a nepali!
But that doesnot is all . We have to make them ,the indian government and all the indians , say that buddha was born in nepal. And unless it's in every indian's head that buddha was born in nepal we must make them do so. A facebook campaign might be an option to raise awareness!!

Strange solar eclipse sparks awe and fear

Thousands of people in Africa and Asia viewed an eclipse Friday as the moon crossed the sun's path, blocking everything but a narrow, blazing rim of light.

The path of the eclipse began in Africa — passing through Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia before crossing the Indian Ocean, where it reached its peak. The path then continued into Asia, where the eclipse could be seen in Maldives, southern India and parts of Sri Lanka, Myanmar and China.

Clouds obscured the partial solar eclipse in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, disappointing residents who were up early to catch a glimpse."I woke up very early because I wanted to see the eclipse, but I have only been able to catch just a few seconds of it because the clouds kept blocking the view. If I weren't more observant, I would've missed it," said Monica Kamau.

The eclipse is known as an annular eclipse because the moon doesn't block the sun completely. Instead, the edge of the sun's disk remains visible as a ring surrounding the moon during the height of the eclipse. The term "annular" comes from the Latin word annulus, meaning "ring."

Annular eclipses, which are considered far less important to astronomers than total eclipses of the sun, occur about 66 times a century and can only be viewed by people in the narrow band along its path. Friday's eclipse was visible from a 190-mile-wide (300-kilometer-wide) path that passes across half the globe.

In Uganda, locals refer to an eclipse as a war between the sun and moon.

"It is rare to see such an eclipse. I am excited to be seeing this one. It shows how powerful God is," said Damalie Nakaja, a shopkeeper in Kampala.

Hundreds gathered to view the phenomenon in southern India's Dhanushkodi, a tiny town at the tip of a rocky strip of land jutting out into the ocean, where the eclipse could be seen for about 10 minutes.

In the southern Indian city of Bangalore, hundreds went to a planetarium to see it.

"This is my first time viewing an eclipse through a pinhole camera at a planetarium, and I'm very excited," said 12-year-old Aniruddh Kaushik.

Others in India were gripped by fear and refused to come outdoors. Hindu mythology states an eclipse is caused when a dragon-demon swallows the sun, while another myth says the sun's rays during an eclipse can harm unborn children.

In northern India's Haridwar town, hosting the Kumbh Mela — touted as the world's largest religious gathering — thousands of devout Hindus marked the eclipse by taking a dip in the frigid waters of the sacred Ganges river.

The eclipse could also be viewed in Indian capital New Delhi and Mumbai, the financial hub.

According to B.P. Koirala Memorial Planetarium, Observatory and Science Museum Development Board, it lasted for three hours in Nepali sky. Most of the Nepalese hid themselves inside their houses and didn't eat in the period of the eclipse. It is not hard to imagine the little kids getting hungry and saying things like "Bhok lagyo", and "Nai ma ta khanchu j bhaye pani" and so on.

In Male, capital of Maldives, hundreds of people watched the eclipse with special glasses in an open field as it reached its peak.

The last total eclipse of the sun was on July 22, 2009, when it was visible in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China and some Japanese islands.

Moon-sized craters in Bhaktapur road stretch

The stretch of road between Sallaghari and Surya Binayak has become a nightmare for commuters and vehicles alike, with its crater-sized potholes and drainage that is leaking onto the roads.

Rajendra Wagle, a regular traveller from Gundu VDC said that it has been more than a year since the road has been in this condition.

“Due to the pot-holed road and the foul smell coming out of the leaking drainage, it has become a problem to travel using any vehicle on that part of the road,” Wagle said.

The sewage system in the area has been damaged by local residents, and the sewage of three VDCs--Sipadol, Gundu and Katunje--has begun to leak onto the road, thus creating a flood-like situation on the road.

The Bhaktapur Department of Road has not repaired the road as of yet by saying that local residents living around Barahi Hall have not allowed the department to repair the pot-holes. According to them, the roads cannot be repaired unless local residents stop flowing drainage onto the road.

Though the construction of the Tinkune-Surya Binayak stretch is currently underway, the Sallaghai-Surya Binayak stretch will see construction only after a year. Similarly, the treaty between the government and the construction company states that the repair work from Tinkune to Manohara River should have been finished within April this year. If the construction work continues as the same speed as of now, it will take three more years for the whole stretch to be completed.

UCPN-M gives 10-day ultimatum to govt

The Unified CPN (Maoist) on Friday gave 9-day ultimatum to the government to address the demands raised by the party regarding the President's move.

A meeting of the Maoist standing committee held at the party headquarters Paris Danda gave November 1 deadline to the government to come up with an understanding on issues raised by the party vis-à-vis the President's move against the erstwhile government's decision to sack the then army chief Rookmangud Katawal.

According to Maoist spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma, the standing committee also decided to launch a strong protest movement if the ongoing dialogue with the ruling parties proved futile in restoring civilian supremacy and rectifying the President's 'unconstitutional' move.

The protest programmes will include picketing of government offices, dharna (sit-in) and non-cooperation with government programmes, Sharma informed.

Sharma added that the party was ready to end the obstruction in the parliament within a minute if the main ruling parties agreed for a parliamentary debate on the President's move.

"The ruling parties will be blamed if the budget is not passed as they have not created an environment to end the deadlock," he argued.

Six killed as car runs over pedestrians in capital, driver still at large

KATHMANDU, Aug 5 - The guilty of Wednesday night’s road accident in downtown capital in which six persons—five Indian nationals and one Nepali—were killed is still at large. A speeding car with registration number Ba 4 Cha 8030 thumped the seven persons nearby the Bir hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, killing six persons walking on the pavement and critically injuring another one. The deceased were returning from the Bir hospital at around 1 this morning. The whereabouts of Biplav Man Singh, the driver of the car, has yet to be known. Singh’s father Divya Man, who is currently in police contact, has said that he will submit his son to police soon after he comes in his contact. According to police, the six died on the way to the hospital. All of them are from the Indian state of Bihar. Five of the dead have been identified as Dharmanath Sinha, Madan Gupta, Krishna Devi, Sanjaya Gupta and Beena Sinha, whereas identity of the sixth has not been ascertained. The deceased were involved in some small business in the capital. The group was returning home with a patient discharged from the

hospital.

According to an eyewitness, the driver backed the car to roll over the

pedestrians after hitting two of them first.

The injured, Deepak Gupta who hails from Sitamadi of Bihar, is undergoing treatment at the Bir Hospital. The driver of the car, Biplab Man Singh, is still at large. Police have been searching for him. However, his father, Divya Man Singh has come in police contact. Police said that it has initiated investigation procedure after the incident and promised to take stern action against the guilty. Speaking at a press meeting orgainsed in the capital, Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Silwal made it clear that it would not compromise while taking action against the guilty. He appealed to all the bereaved family and relatives to maintain calmness as the accident was unfortunate.

Meanwhile, the relatives and friends of the deceased have been staging demonstration at Jamal, Bhotahity and Bir Hospital area demanding action against the guilty.

The demonstrations have largely affected the vehicular movement in the capital, Traffic Police said.

JAJARKOT, Aug 5 - Five more persons died from the epidemic of diarrhoea in the district on Wednesday, taking the death toll from the epidemic since its first outbreak in April to 189.

The deceased have been identified as Bahadur Rokaya, 55, and Bhanmati Tiluwa, 57, of Thalaraika VDC-9, Bhim Bahadur BK, 21, of Nayakbada VDC-8, and Subi BK, 55, of Laha VDC-1.

Likewise, Saraswati BK, 6, of Paduria-6, died last night after falling ill due to diarrhoea.

5 more swine flu patients

The Ministry of Health (MoH) on Tuesday said five more people have been diagnosed with AH1N1, earlier known as Swine flu. With the latest detection of people contracting with this flu virus in the country reached 14.
According to deputy coordinator of Influenza Control Project of MoH, Dr. Jitendra Man Shrestha, those infected include a 45-year-old Australian citizen and the rest are Nepali citizens returning mainly from the US.
The Austrelian citizen has already returned to his country, whereas two others have already completed their course of treatment and remaining two are being treated under the special supervision, according to the statement issued by the MoH.
The Ministry has also appealed to the public to
immediately contact the health centre in case they show any
sign of Flu.

Police reveal details on Khyati murder

Police have revealed more details on Khyati murder case after a two-week long investigation.
At a press conference organised on Friday, police said they had concluded Khyati was killed within three hours of abduction. The final post-mortem report has shown that Khyati was hit three times by a rod before she died.
The main accused of the murder Biren Pradhan has confessed he hit Khyati with the rod to make her unconscious after the sleeping pills she had been unknowingly given failed to render her totally unconscious.
His accomplice, Merina Shakya was present during the incident and had tried to prevent Pradhan from hitting Khyati. Pradhan, however, threatened Shakya to kill both her parents and her only brother if she leaked any information about the incident.
Police have also refuted any attempts of rape before murder.
Pradhan has revealed he initially had plans to ask Rs 2.5 million in ransom. However, he changed his mind and reduced the ransom amount to Rs 1 million after Khyati accidentally died before collecting the ransom.
Police have filed a case against Pradhan on charge of kidnap and murder demanding life-imprisonment and seizure of all his properties. The penalty could be more severe if there is enough pressure from the media and the public, but it is totally up to the court to decide, police said.
Most people are demanding a death penalty to the main accused. There is no provision of death penalty in the interim constitution

The sudden departure of one of the greatest performers of all time Michael Jackson, 50, on Thursday following a cardiac arrest shocked and saddened millions of people around the world who grew up listening to his songs and watching his performances. The news was particularly devastating for Jackson’s fans, which includes thousands of Nepalis within and outside the country, who had been eagerly waiting for his series of 50 comeback concerts beginning July 13 in London.

Jackson’s life was a heady mix of triumph and tragedy. He made his debut in the professional music scene as a member of the Jackson 5 band in 1969 when he was just 11 and with the release of his solo album Off the Wall in 1979, he not only began to be rightfully known as the King of Pop but became one of the world’s most famous persons. His 1982 solo album Thriller – which went on to become the best-selling album of all time only to be eclipsed by Eagles’ Greatest Hits, 1971-1975 in the late 1990’s – catapulted his fame to another level. Some of his other albums such as Bad and Dangerous also became the world’s best-selling records. One of the other major highlights of Jackson’s career was the charity single We are the world, which he co-wrote with Lionel Richie, that raised almost $50 million to aid the poor in Africa.

However, Jackson’s life was not all beer and skittles. As a child, Jackson was emotionally and physically abused by his father and he carried the trauma with him into his adulthood. Jackson was charged with child sexual abuse in 1993 and 2005. Though he was acquitted on both instances, the allegations had a debilitating effect on his career and personal life from which he never completely recovered. Jackson’s facial surgeries (according to rumors, he underwent approximately ten procedures) also received a lot of public condemnation over the years.

Death, however, proved that his follies and foibles over the years had failed to undermine his popularity. As the news of his death began to circulate, the volume of Jackson-related searches spiked to such an extent that Google News first interpreted it as an attack on its service. Twitter, a free social networking and micro-blogging service, crashed following a surge in condolence messages.

Like the world over, a whole generation of young Nepalis in the 1980s were deeply influenced by the magic of Jackson. Then, Nepali artists and common people alike imitated everything Jackson had to offer, from his curly and long hairdo to his style of dance and music. There is no doubt that Nepali fans today are as grieved as others all over the world on his sad demise.

Jackson may no longer be with us but his musical legacy will keep him alive forever. A fan’s comment neatly sums up the complexities of the legend: “I loved Michael Jackson. I hated Michael Jackson. I admired Michael Jackson. I was ashamed of Michael Jackson. I was sorry for Michael Jackson. I was proud of Michael Jackson.”

Entry fee to Pashupatinath doubled

Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) has decided to double the entry fee for foreigners to the Pashupatinath area from Monday.
Paramananda Shakya, member secretary at PADT, informed that the entry fee had been increased to Rs 500 from existing Rs 250.
Visitors from India,
however, are not required to pay any fee.
“We have never charged Indian visitors because both Nepal and India share cultural and religious identities. They come here as pilgrims not tourists,” Shakya added.
Shakya, however, revealed that the PADT had been studying the possibilities of introducing entry fee for Indian visitors to generate more funds. Shakya also said he had already informed travel agencies about the change in entry fee structure to the area listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
More than 300 foreigners visit the temple premises every day.
“After increasing the entry fee, we will also focus on infrastructure development in the area. We will build more eateries and restrooms of international standard. We are also planning to present an attractive souvenir to every foreign visitors visiting the area,” Shakya said.
Meanwhile, the PADT has deployed additional tourist police personnel and security guards
for the wellbeing of
foreign visitors.
He also said security guards had intensified round-the-clock vigil at
the temple premises to
protect property and artifact in the area.

Indian Border Force drives 1800 Nepalese

Hundreds of people have been displaced as border security force of India,Seema Surakshya Bal (SSB), reportedly drove them out form variousbordering villages of Dang district along Nepal-India border.

More than 1,800 people are now taking shelter in a community forest of Satbariya-2 in Deukhuri area in the district.

The victims said the SSB personnel encroached the Nepali territory and torched their settlements.

"We were compelled to leave our homes to protect our lives," said Purna Kumari Bista, 70, of Rajpur VDC-7. She said the Indian side also shifted border pillars some 35 metres inside Nepali land.

The villagers of various 22 bordering villages of Rajpur, Bela and Koilabas VDCs in the district were displaced by the SSB. The displaced have also accused the SSB personnel of raping their women and pillaging their villages every now and then. The enraged victims blamed the government for not providing security despite the repeated excesses from the Indian side.

Entry into Singha Durbar to be eased

The Prime Minister’s Office has started using internet to help genuine visitors to Singha Durbar enter into the principle government secretariat without going through any unnecessary hassle.

The new system was introduced four days ago. It allows officials at the PMO to upload the name of anyone making a call from the Singha Durbar gate in computer equipped with internet facility. An arrangement has been made for police personnel deputed at the Southern Gate, the gate used for the entrance of ordinary people, to tally name of the visitors seeking entry into the Singha Durbar and the names uploaded by the PMO. The visitors would be allowed to enter into Singha Durbar only if the names matched.

At present, a commoner willing to visit Singha Durbar needs to go through a tedious process. The prospective visitor first needs to call the officials concerned in the ministry for an appointment. The official then sends a letter to the Singha Durbar Police Battalion requesting it to let the person concerned enter into the principal government secretariat.

The battalion then sends a letter to the officials deputed at the Southern Gate to let the person enter into Singha Durbar. Officials at the PMO said it takes almost two hours for the entry permission letter to reach the southern gate once the request is made.

“This (the new system) is an experiment,” said an official. “The system will be used if the experiment proved effective.”

Inspector Milan KC at Singha Durbar Police Battalion said the new measure will prove effective to regulate visitors to Singha Durbar without having them to go through unnecessary hassles.

Schools told to stay fee hike

The School Fee Fixing and Monitoring Central Committee on Sunday directed all private schools across the country not to implement their decision to hike school fee by 25 percent.

The decision has come as a big relief to the guardians wary of the unilateral fee hike.

A five-hour long meeting of the committee held at Department of Education (DoE), Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, made the decision to this effect, according to Chitra Devkota, director of the DoE.

Devkota said both Private and Boarding Schools Association of Nepal (PABSON) and National Private and Boarding Schools Association of Nepal (N-PABSON) had agreed to send circulars to all their affiliate schools not to implement their earlier decision to hike fees by 25 percent. “We have also decided to direct all district education offices in this regard,” he added.

Private schools had recently hiked fees by 25 per cent in response to government decision to impose five per cent Education Service Tax (EST). The government has criticized the move, saying that the five percent EST was supposed to be taken from the profits earned by the schools, not from the guardians.

The 11-member committee comprises director general and director of the DoE, two representatives of Ministry of Education, educationists, a representative of guardians’ association and chairpersons of PABSON and N-PABSON, among others.

The private schools have agreed to fix the fees in a scientific manner and adjust fees in each school accordingly. “This does not allow private schools to flatly hike fees by 25 percent,” said Suprabhat Bhandari, President of Guardians’ Association of Nepal (GAN).

As per the existing legal provision, private schools can effect fee hike only after the fee fixing committee endorses a proposal to this effect. And this should be done two month before the start of new academic session. But the PABSON and N-PABSON had failed to follow this due process.

PABSON President Bhoj Bahadur Shah said that they have agreed to direct all schools to submit a proposal justifying fee hike to district monitoring committees concerned. “New fee structure will come into effect after the committee endorses the fee hike proposal,” he said.

“The Band’s history does not go too far. It was 2002 when we realize that we got some potential in us. So we started jaming up regularly. We used to jam up before but hadn’t formed a band . In 2002 we formed a band. We did covers for time being until we named our band as Epitaph. Then we started composing our own stuffs. After every member passed slc, we got together regularly and jammed.”

Friends since their childhood, the members are Khagendra Raj Ghale on vocals, Krishna Gurung & Yoban Gurun on guitars, Niraj Dhakal on bass and Pujan Manandhar on drums. BIOGRAPHY:

The history of the band starts quite some time before it was actually formed. Back in their pre-SLC days (1997), Sunny and Avaya played in a band called “Applesauce” along with Massismo (Max). Max played bass, Avaya played the drums, and Sunny handled both the mic and the guitar. Covering artists such as Alice in Chains and Silverchair, Applesauce played a variety of live shows, establishing itself as a band that loves to perform. However, despite a promising future, it seemed that the band was destined to fail. In 1998, Max had to leave for Denmark, and while this deprived them of a nifty bassist and a close friend, their approaching examinations seemed to spell the word doom.

After surviving their exams, however, Sunny and Avaya planned to do anything but sit around feeling voiceless. The only problem was that with Max gone, the band was incomplete. It was around this time that Avaya started fooling around with a bass guitar, and discovered something very strange… he actually enjoyed it!. A few more slap-and-pops were enough to convince him that it was time to trade in his sticks for a plectrum. Looking for other musicians to help complete a group, the band came across Dipesh. Even though they had been friends for quite some time, no one had any idea that Dipesh could actually play drums. At that time, Dipesh was playing drums in his school band “Saboteur”, and after seeing him play, they knew they had found their new drummer. All it took was a little persuasion and a lot of threats (hehe), before Dipesh agreed to play with them. And with Nitesh on vocals, and Sunny handling axe duties again, “Albatross” was born.

While the whole music scene of Nepal revolved around hard rock and heavy metal, the band ripped through cliches with their furious live shows and their covers of unconventional bands like Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They performed quite extensively and became a regular feature at the Bamboo’s Club in Thamel. “Nitesh used to hang out with us and his style really reaped the hell out of my brains”, Sunny says. At this time, Albatross also recorded a single “Broke 17″, a track that pays tribute to one of their favorite bands, Rage Against the Machine, with its choppy riffs and jacked up rap. “We were (and are) really influenced and inspired by RATM and so we recorded a song Broke 17. It was recored at the Sacred Soundz Studio and produced by one of the coolest people in the world: Iman Bikram Shah”, the band says. Although this single failed to get the airplay it deserved, the band continued playing live shows (the lifeblood of Albatross), and even jammed with Axata at various events. Then, with Nitesh deciding to take a break from vocal duty, the band decided to take a slightly different musical direction and along came Sirish from Monkey Temple on vocals. With his distinguishing ability to throw his voice amazingly high, the band found that they could now play many other styles of music as well. ” With [Sirish] Dali we started playing covers of Korn, Creed, Pantera, Pearl Jam, Iron Maiden, etc. at our various gigs. And to top it all off, our new tastes helped us develop our original work as well.” The band recorded another single, titled “hellskitchen”, a metal-meets-rock track that features a very tight string section and precise drumming along with some lung-stretching vocal feats. The track has been featured on the Muzik Isles compilation album, and although it has fallen prey to poor mixing, any Albatross live show will bring this song up to its full potential.

The band had just barely begun to relax when it faced problems again. Sirish had to leave Nepal in order to continue his studies in America. The band was without a vocalist, yet again. Not knowing what to do, Sunny and Avaya thought things over and decided to take a risk. About a month ago, they had seen another band play at a GAA gig in Thamel. The band had just been starting out and went by the rather comical name of “Mop Handle Mama”. They decided to call up Diwas and Anuraag from MPH and jam with them for a while, and see how things went. To everyone’s surprise, they discovered they all had similar tastes in music, and their ideas about music flowed in pretty much the same direction. And so, after a month of heavy headbanging followed by some heavy bonging, Anuraag and Diwas officially joined Albatross.

Wishing to take the band along slightly darker and heavier roads, they are all dedicated to churning out the heaviest music they can. Twin-riffing and thrashing out solos with a characteristic precision that still houses the fury of the bands they are inspired by, the string section of the band, comprised of Sunny and Diwas, has attained a new heaviness that is multiplied by the slam of Avaya’s versatile bass-playing: from the teethy crunchiness of a full-blown metal song, to the engine-smooth groove of funk-rap inflection. Influenced heavily by Korn and RATM, Anuraag revels in pushing his voice to the limits and more than compensates for any lack of through frenzied doses of banging the very blood out of his head. And with the unique skinslamming abilities and almost jazzlike timing of Dipesh’s drums, Albatross is indeed flying high. In more ways than one.

CURRENT STUFF:

The band is working on its first ever full-length album. Wishing to address various topics such as the recent rather disheartening slander of the band’s name and more seriously, the state of the country, they would like to take their time and come up with meaningful songs that have all the “force and power of a punch to the gut”.

“We want to come up with songs that have indomitable strength and fury. Something as brutal as Pantera and yet with all the intelligence of Rage Against the Machine. When we get on stage, we want to be able to just explode… so that the sky and the ground change places for us. Nothing beats racking the hell out of our respective instruments and having a good time. And that’s the biggest factor in it all: Playing live. And having a fucking kickass time doing it.”

With almost an apocalyptical name, Black Metallers Antim Grahan has returned once again to scorch the underground scene of Nepal. Formed in the early 2004, Black Metallers Antim Grahan rise from Kathmandu. The band took a hiatus for about 2 and half years when the front man of the band went abroad for his further studies, but as now he has returned, they are back in business with a few line up changes. Fronted by the vocalist Parash, Antim Grahan is Pankaj on guitars, Sunny on bass, Niraj on keys and Sabin on drums. The band has undergone a few line up changes as few of their members left the band due to their personal reasons. The band took out an EP titled ‘Forever Winter’ which was a joint production of KTMROCKS RECORDS, Mingmar Dolma Lama and Antim Grahan. Antim Grahan is the first band to have a record deal in the history of Nepali metal scene. They got the label of KTMROCKS RECORDS which happened to be the first record company in Nepal for the local underground metal scene. The EP, ‘Forever Winter’ got an overwhelming response from the metal fans which created an immense popularity of the band in the underground metal community around the country. Songs like ‘Infected’ and the title song itself ‘Forever Winter’ was a massive success.
The band says that their music is representation of pain, suffering and sinister realms of dark fantasy worlds. About their music, the band says “We really don’t want to give away any messages to our listeners whatsoever coz the whole music is represented in a very story like way, more of like fairy tales with a very dark and painful ambience and bitter endings. So all we want is that the people enjoy our music and have totally fuckin’ awesome time while listening.
After a very good response from the fans from underground community for their debut EP, “Forever Winter”, they came out with their second album titled “Tales From The Darkened Woods”. This album by the band had come in a very short time off its release of their first EP, but their 2nd album was much improved technically and musically. ‘Tales from the Darkened Woods’ is much more bigger, better and heavier then their first effort.
Carrying on to the melodic level that the band has been going on, they experimented with traditional ‘Flute’ on their 2nd album. This is the first time in Nepal that any underground metal band has introduced these kinds of experiments. The new album contains a very well received cover version of ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ originally by Iron Maiden. Again, this album was out on KTMROCKS RECORDS.
Which started as a melodic black metal approach, now the band is craving towards a bit more brutal genre of the music that they play after their reunion after a long pause. ChhalPhal: Gandharba Culture and the Tradition of Nepali Folk Music By Stephanie A. Spray

Stephanie Anne Spray spoke on the rich culture of the Gandharba (or Gaine) in Nepal as found in their music. She emphasized while their identity is tied to their music, their tradition of music is being challenged and disappearing in modern day Nepal. She explained how Gandharba are struggling to preserve their tradition. The odds are stacked against them as the coming generations look for other means of livelihood, both out of necessity and sometimes embarrassment over stigma associated with their traditional caste occupation –often changing their caste name in an attempt to counter stigmas. In Kathmandu, a group of Gandharba started an NGO in 1995 called the Gandharba Culture and Arts Organization (G.C.A.O.). Beginning with this group, then through fieldwork outside of the valley, she is engaging in long term fieldwork project that she plans to continue with PhD work. Meanwhile, she is actively working to organize events for the Gandharba in Kathmandu and the U.S. Her discussion touched on the challenges faced by the Gandharba today and the implications losing the tradition of the Gandharba would have for Nepal.

Stephanie A. Spray is in her final year in a master’s program in Harvard Divinity School. She is a graduate of Smith College where she received highest honors in the Department of Religion. She spent a year in 2001-02 in Nepal with a Fulbright Scholarship studying the culture and music of the Gandharba of Nepal. There, she learned to play the Nepali folk drum, the madal, while accompanying them in song. She had previously studied tabla with Hom Nath Upadhyaya in 1999-2000 and again in 2001. She worked with the Gandharba this past summer and intends to continue with them after finishing her Masters. She hopes to bring some Gandharba to perform in the US.

Presentation Summary:

In their traditional role, the Gandharbas (a.k.a. Gaine) are a caste of musicians who travel from village to village, house to house, singing and playing the Nepali sarangi (a Nepali folk fiddle). Prior to the advent and prevalence of radio in Nepal, they were the bringers of entertainment and news, even playing a significant role in spreading a national sensibility not long after the nation’s unification by Prithivi Narayan Shah. Due to their traditional role as itinerant musicians, many have compared them to minstrel singers of Western Europe. Their identity is complicated by their position outside of the caste system, as untouchables. With the lessoning demand for the Gandharba’s music, their role is increasingly ambivalent. They are welcomed by some, but seen as nuisances to others. Some merely view them as beggars or talentless street peddlers.

Gandharba are not exactly an ethnic group; they are an occupational caste found across Nepal, even into Sikkim and Bhutan. According to the Muluki Ain of 1854, they are untouchables, lower than the Damai, yet higher than the Badi. According to a 2001 government census, today there are an estimated 5,000-some Gandharba in Nepal, although many say their number is double that. As far Stephanie knows, only Gandharba men travel and perform. Traditionally, Gandharba travel village to village, house to house, performing in groups or as individuals, with the hope for payment in rice, lentils, or rupees from their hosts. They are known for their instrument the sarangi, which they make, and their repertoire of songs, which map out fields of Nepali geography and experience.

Although the caste system was legally banned in 1963, it continues. In cities, many Gandharba exist with a degree of anonymity, yet they continue to bear the burden of generations of missed opportunity and struggle. Although there are many examples of their experience as untouchables, one Gandharba of Tanahun gave one example of discrimination from his own family. Although his father had a brief opportunity to attend school, he was forced to sit at the back of the classroom on the floor, lest he defile the benches, which were reserved for upper class children. When a schoolmaster sought to mete out punishment to children, he would instruct other Gandharba to beat him, so that the teacher need not touch the child. Later, when he was a child in school, although the system of Gandharba’s beating other Gandharba was no longer in place, he was often not allowed to drink from the water jugs set aside for children. Although everyone drank with the jug held above the mouth, to prevent the lips from touching the jug and defiling the water, Gandharba were prohibited from using the jugs. He explained that this created a lot of anger and frustration for him as a boy. He expressed relief that his own children mix freely with the other caste children in school. He opined that caste distinction is beginning to recede, even in village Nepal. In its place, abject poverty persists.

As a reaction to generations of stigma related to their “begging” occupation, many Gandharba seek other avenues of work. For varied political and social reasons, many Gandharba choose to abandon the name “Gaine.” Many have changed their caste name to Gandharba or Ghandari, while some have chosen the ambiguous name Nepali, such as the well-known performer Ram Sharan Nepali. Although there are varied opinions within the Gandharba about the name Gaine, in many Gandharba’s experience, it is a degrading name. Following the suggestion of Radio Nepal personality Dharma Thapa in 1963, many have changed their names to Gandharba, from the musical creatures found in the in the Vedas and Puranas, as well as their own folklore. In this new chosen name, they are placing themselves and their music in a dignified, divine realm, which contrasts sharply with their struggle.

The story of their origin

Nepal’s Gandharba have accounts of the origin of their caste occupation. Although there are many variations of the first Gandharba story, many begin with the creation of the universe. Not long after Brahma forms the worlds, he expels wax from his ear and snot from his nose, from with two demons arise, Madhu and Kaitab. As they wreak havoc across the cosmos, Shiva creates the fierce goddess Kali to destroy them. She succeeds, saving the universe from their fury. In celebration of this event, the gods gather the fallen body parts, using them as instruments. One such instrument was the Gandharba arbaj, a lute-like instrument, said to be the predecessor of the Nepali sarangi. The gods also began a large, boisterous feast, dancing and singing. Meanwhile, the Gandharba sage, also created by Brahma, had been performing austerities for 12 years.

So according to the story, the first Gandharba was a powerful sage, not an outcaste. After performing twelve years of yogic austerities (tapas), the gods begin to worry that his awesome power will ignite universe. To prevent calamity, they decide to distract him. They choose to dance and sing noisily, until finally Gandharba awakens. At that moment, his eyes fall upon Ganika, a dancing apsara, and, unbeknownst to him, he impregnates her. According to the story, after twelve years of austerities he is extremely hungry and asks for food. The gods scourge their banquet for food, but only leftovers remain, which they collect and feed to Gandharba. Upon eating the leftovers, or jutho (polluted food), his power diminishes.

Meanwhile the apasaras, including Ganika, dance in front of Vishnu. Vishnu becomes offended by her display, cursing then revealing her pregnancy to the banquet quests. When the gods ask who the father is, Laxmi reveals Gandharba as the guilty party. The couple is imprisoned for their illegitimate relationship. Ten months later, Ganika gives birth to their son while in the prison. Bramha tells them that since they have only been eating leftover, polluted food for the duration of their imprisonment, their son should be named Udarmukh Gandharba. He then tells them they are to live as outcastes, traveling and playing music. As they travel, “village to village, house to house” they must “make sad people laugh, and make laughing people cry by singing.”

The story is one crystallization of many versions of what I call their “origin story.” It is useful in understanding how the Gandharba think of their position as heaven’s fallen celestial musicians.

The Music of Gandharbas

The best of the Gandharba are masters of song and improvisation. An individual Gandharba’s level of skill is, like all musicians, defined by the music he creates and/or the style of his performance. Some are proficient in a number of instruments and genres of song, while some are disinterested in the art. Although Gandharba inherit their caste professions from their fathers, not all choose or can continue the art. Although the term lok git (folk song) is a confused term encompassing mish-mash of music in modern Nepal, many Gandharba classify their music as such. One Gandharba from the G.C.A.O. explained this term, saying Gandharba lok git are songs of joy, love, and the sadness of everyday people. Regarding the different categories found within the Gandharba repertoire, some examples are kharka songs – epic songs about gods, public figures, or soldiers; ghatana songs – describing local events, often with social or moral commentary; and mangal songs – auspicious songs, often relating stories of the gods.

Musical instruments of Gandharba

Sarangi: The sarangi is the primary instrument played by the Gandharba. It is a wooden fiddle with no fixed size, played upright. Since sarangis are generally produced at all stages by hand, each is unique. Generally, a good, average-sized sarangi may sell on the streets of Kathmandu anywhere from 1,800 to 3,000 rupees depending on the craftsmanship and the dukha, or toil, that was invested in the piece. Although not always fair, the price is often simply a negotiation between the dire need of the musician and the will of the buyer. The strings for the sarangi were traditionally made from the prepared intestines of goats or other animals, although many Gandharba are using a variety of resources, from metal wire to badminton strings. These changes have affected not only the sound of the sarangi, but the pitch of singing as well. Sarangi designs are also changing to appeal to potential customers as well. To appeal to buyers who may never play the instrument, they may be carved with various degrees of intricacy, with designs of the Buddha, Ganesh, flowers, or Garudas. Nepali sarangis are different from their Indian cousin.

Arbaj: The Gandharba claim that their sarangi is an adaptation of the arbaj, a four stringed lute. It may be strummed with the fingers, a grain or rice, or plucked with a wooden pick. The number of men who can play arbaj is estimated by the Gandharba to be very low, somewhere from 5-10.

Other instruments: Gandharba have incorporated the Nepali folk drum, the madal, into their music. Although the madal is not made by their caste, but by the Badi caste, this drum is ubiquitous throughout Nepal and many Gandharba are proficient players. Even if they cannot play, the Gandharba have incorporated the rhythms of the madal into their songs. Some Gandharba also play the mouth harp and the bansuri (bamboo flute).

Many Gandharba describe themselves as self-taught. Nonetheless, their entire community is involved in a process of performance and critique. Although there is no fixed system of teaching, hence a variety or playing styles and techniques, Gandharba are critically engaged in evaluating other Gandharba musicians.

"Music is our life!"

Recently, many Gandharba in the past decade or so have shifted the emphasis of their profession from performance associated to "begging" to doing "business.” What they mean by “business” generally means marketing their art, especially their instruments, to tourists. Due to the fickleness of the tourism sector and the challenges faced by war-torn Nepal in recent years, these days they rarely find buyers. Faced with few options to earn money, some look for other work, and when they find none, they return to the road performing for rice or lentils.

On the advice of one Peace Corps worker, a group of Gandharba began a government registered N.G.O. in Kathmandu called the Gandharba Culture and Art Organization (G.C.A.O.). The organization acts as a support for over 150 Gandharba from all over Nepal, when they do “business” in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Their office is not just a place to hang their sarangis, but also a performance and meeting space open to Gandharba across Nepal. Their door remains open to the curious visitor, Nepali or foreigner. Stephanie and a group of interested Nepalis and Americans are currently working with G.C.A.O. to organize a group of Gandharba for performances in the United States.

The Gandharbas are a treasure of oral history and literature, little recognized in Nepal or abroad. Although their songs are unique to Nepal, the appeal of their sound and spirit cross caste and nation boundaries. Although a few of them have to earned fame and success, generally the Gandharba struggle to sustain their families and maintain their traditional identity, which is found in most evidently in their music.

Discussion Summary:

Q. Have any Gandharba come into mainstream Nepali music scene?
A. There have been a few such as Jhalak Man Gandharba (who sang Amaile sodhlin ni) and Ram Saran Nepali who obtained jobs in Radio Nepal. Some, such as Shyam Nepali, play sarangi for Nepali films, but few have made it playing traditional Gandharba songs. They perhaps need more marketing to appeal to the mainstream.

Q. Why do you want to bring the Gandharba to the US?
A. The primary purpose is to expose Gandharba music to foreign ears, to find a larger audience for their music. I think many selections of their music have the potential to appeal to not only specialists in Nepali or South Asian music, but to others as well. Some foreign listeners have compared their music to Irish or American folk, while some songs seemed like a Nepali rendition of blues. In a shrinking world connected by advanced transportation, the Gandharba could continue their traditional occupation traversing beyond local villages, crossing cultural and trans-national boundaries.

Q. How closely is Gandharba music and the Gandharba coupled? Would it make more sense to view Gandharba music in a more general sense as Nepali music and promote it with that emphasis?
A. They are intertwined. Although many Nepalis of other castes can play the sarangi and sing some form of lok git and although there may be different approaches to promote their music, I do not think it is possible to separate Gandharba music from the cultural and social context of Gandharba experience. If marketed as the music of Nepal, it is inseparable from a Gandharba context.

Q. What do you think of suggestions to adapt their music, perhaps into some kind of fusion, or adding more instruments to be able to sell more?
A. They have already incorporated instruments such as madal and bansuri. Many now are familiar with jhyaaure and khyale lok git, in which they are creating news songs. I am hesitant to encourage fusion into modern pop or, as one person suggested, dance music. I think this would rob Gandharba music of some of its particular texture and expression, which is what creates its appeal in the first place. The goal is not to water it down, but to highlight the indigenous aspects that give their songs life.

Q. How does one appreciate the Gandharba music? Aren't the lyrics important? How would a Western audience absorb its full flavor?
A. The lyrics are arguably equally as important as the melody or rhythm. Of course, both are intertwined in one moment, which created a problem for people who cannot understand the lyrics. Explaining the context for the music to a foreign audience is a major problem, but not insurmountable. It would take creative strategy to present the music.

Q. Who writes the music? Is it improvised?
A. Of course, like all music, theirs is composed a number of ways—in groups or as individuals. Some, like Khim Bahadur, keep notebooks of their own compositions, while others improvise freely within older songs. Depending on the musician’s mood and/or skill and the audience, one song may be performed in many ways. I was recently horrified by a recent book published in Nepal on the Gandharba, which presents their songs as fixed compositions. Some Gandharba I know were also very upset, since it falsely represented their songs as set pieces. Although songs may be composed in groups or as individuals, each musician has the opportunity to make it his own through performance. To present a song as a fixed track gives a false impression, for it misses the vitality or fluidity of music. But this problem is not unique to the Gandharba, but to any musician who sees his or her music as more fluid and creative than studio sound.

Fire at Khajoori Cookies Factory

Fire has broken out at the factory of Khajoori cookies at Chapagaun in Lalitpur district on Thursday.

The fire that broke out since 12 this afternoon has still not been put out, the police informed.

Local residents are trying to put out the inferno after the water in the fire brigade that reached the incident area finished.

According to the locals, other houses could be gutted in the fire as the factory is located in densely populated area, local Bishnnu Bhattarai said.

Karishma grabs 12 gold, breaks Nayana's record

Adding four more golds to her kit, swimmer Karishma Karki set a new national record on Thursday taking her medal tally to 12 golds at the ongoing Fifth National Games.
She has set a new record of grabbing most number of gold medals at a sports tournament in the country.

She bettered the previous record of Nayana Shakya who had the record with nine gold medals.

On the third day of the Fifth National Games, Karki bagged gold medals at the 200 Metres Individual Medley, 100 Metres Backstroke, 100 Metres Breaststroke and 50 Metres Free Style.

Record holder Karki had participated in 12 of 13 events in swimming and bagged gold medals at every event she competed.

A fusillade of bullets wiped out 10 members of the royal family, including Birendra, the popular king.
the killing was brutal. A shot to the head ended the king's life as he lay bleeding from shots fired earlier.
the finger on the trigger was that of his embittered 30-year-old son, Dipendra.
He had fired three bursts, twice from an automatic pistol. He then let fly with an M16 rifle."

The royal massacre happened on 1 Jun 2001. In two months' time, the royal survivors will once again mark the anniversary of the tragedy.
Eight years after that horrific bloodbath, Nepal's last crown prince, Paras Bikram Shah, nephew of Birendra, is breaking his silence.

He wants to clear ugly, persistent rumours of his involvement in the incident, though a commission has cleared him of any complicity.

Reacting to recent reports that the current Nepali government might reopen the investigation into the massacre, Prince Paras, who is now largely based in Singapore, decided to speak to senior Singapore media men.

'The Nepali people need to know the truth,' he said.

Prince Paras, 37, spoke exclusively to The New Paper over two days in the past fortnight, first at the Raffles Town Club and then at his River Valley condominium unit.

He still shivers as he recalls that night of terror.
'It was utter pandemonium. The mortally wounded were groaning, blood was splattered on the walls and floor. The survivors, including my wife, whimpered as they crouched, some hiding behind a sofa, as bullets ricocheted everywhere.'

As he spoke, Prince Paras' face glistened with sweat. His orange juice stayed untouched throughout the three hour-long interview.

In his desire to get the story out, the pack-a-day smoker didn't even pause to light a cigarette.

He said: 'For four years after that massacre, I was not able to sleep. Till today, the nightmare keeps coming back to haunt me.'

After the turmoil of the dreadful incident, Prince Paras and a host of other witnesses told a commission of inquiry what they saw.

Over the years, the prince has had time to think and re-think about the events of that fateful night.

Only now are some of the pieces falling clearly into place, in his mind at least, he said.

Yet nothing seemed amiss that night as family members and relatives gathered for a party in the billiards room in Dipendra's residence on the palace grounds. This was the custom on Friday nights.

There was no sense that their life of wealth and ease was about to change, that their world was about to come tumbling down.

At 8pm, there was the first hint of trouble, Prince Paras recalled.

'I got there a bit late, but Dipendra was staggering around in the room, as if he were drunk, as he usually was. But on this occasion, he did not reek of alcohol. An hour or so later, just as the king was about to enter the room, Dipendra collapsed.

'Looking back, I now realise he was pretending. His brother, Niranjan, and I carried him to his bedroom upstairs.

'We placed him on the bed and tried to remove the Glock pistol from the holster on his left hip so that he would be more comfortable. But he suddenly woke up and told us to leave it alone.

'Then, I noticed that his Colt M16 rifle was on the dressing table, outside the cupboard where it was usually kept. I did not make too much of it as he kept six or seven guns in his room. I left the room and rejoined the party.'

The king was mingling with the older generation.

Prince Paras was with the younger relatives in an alcove where they could smoke, partly out of sight of the elders.

They put out their cigarettes when the king approached the bar near the alcove.

Then, it turned violent.

'Suddenly, Dipendra charged into the room. He had changed into army camouflage. The M16 was slung on his shoulders, together with a shotgun.

'His Glock pistol hung at his hip. He fired one burst into the ceiling with his Heckler & Koch MP5 sub-machine gun, then a burst at his father. His Majesty was hit by three bullets.

'Dipendra then moved out of the room, presumably to protect the entrance.

' I watched in great shock. I was not able to move for at least 30 seconds. Then I pulled myself together. The king's younger sister was cradling him, his head in her lap.'

Prince Paras paused as he reflected on the sequence of events. He recalled Prince Niranjan drawing his own pistol and laying it next to the king. He was the only other person in the room who was armed.

Runs after brother

Then Prince Niranjan ran after his brother, who was outside. Was Prince Niranjan offering the king his pistol to protect himself? Or did he want to confront his brother without further bloodshed?

Prince Paras continued: 'Two to three minutes later, shots rang out. Niranjan was later found with a shot in the back and two in the head. I suspect he was shot when he refused to support Dipendra in his bid to seize power.'

The violence continued.

Dipendra walked back in, this time wielding the M16, said Prince Paras.

'He walked up to his father and shot him in the head at point-blank range. There was no expression on his face as he kept his finger on the trigger.'

After that, Dipendra went 'berserk', said Prince Paras. 'He shot at everybody in the room, anybody who moved. He must have let fly a total of 75 rounds.

'My mother took two shots in the shoulder and fell to the ground. Two other people fell on top of her, which was probably what saved her life. One of the bullets is lodged in her lung till today. Doctors say it's too risky to extract it as it is close to her heart.'

The king's sister, Princess Shoba, who was cradling him in her lap, put up her hand to shield herself. She lost a few fingers and there were burn marks on her face. She toppled over but she survived.

'The king's younger brother was next to be gunned down.'

Where was Prince Paras at this time?

'We were crouching in the alcove and were fortunate not to be in the line of fire,' he said.

'I pushed everybody, including my wife, my sister and my cousins, behind the sofas.'

Then, a tinkling sound of bells outside the room caught Dipendra's attention.

It was his mother hurrying past, the sound coming from the anklets she wore.

She could have been going up to Dipendra's bedroom to get a weapon, said Prince Paras.

'This is what I presumed happened next. Dipendra caught up with his mother at the top of the stairs and shot her. Her blood flowed down the stairs like a waterfall - it was still there long after her body was removed.'

The silence after the frenzied gunshots was deafening. The floor of the billiards room was slippery, with blood everywhere.

Price Paras stared into the distance as he recalled the horrific scene of carnage.

'The smell was horrible, that of burnt blood, the smell you get when people are shot at close range. Bodies were lying crumpled on the floor, people crying and asking for help.'

Where were the palace guards? Did they not hear the shots?

They probably did.

Were they afraid to intervene or did they think Dipendra was shooting for amusement, as he sometimes did, at flower pots, at lizards?

There were times when he and his father used to test guns in the palace before deciding which one to buy for the military. Whatever the reason, they did not intervene.

The silence was broken by one final single shot, followed by a grunting sound.

Prince Paras said he heard the sound coming from near the pond in the garden. It was the same grunt he heard later from Dipendra when he took him to the hospital.

'That is why I believe he shot himself in the garden. The grunting sound was the same. It was like the groaning sound cats make at night.'

Dipendra was discovered later with a single bullet wound in the head.

But Prince Paras, who was still inside, said his priority was to tend to the people inside and get them of the palace.

'I telephoned the security people, who rushed the 14 injured, including the king and queen, to hospital. They broke a glass door to move the injured out.

'The royal couple were already dead.

'I took Dipendra and five other persons to hospital in a Landcruiser. He kept on making that grunting sound as he lay in the vehicle.'

Dipendra lived for another three days, during which time he was proclaimed king.

Prince Paras' father, Gyanendra, who was away in Pokhara at the time, returned to the capital only two days after the shooting. Poor weather prevented his earlier return.

He became king after Dipendra's death but was forced to give up the throne when the monarchy was abolished by the Maoist government last May.

The palace is today a national museum. The billiards room has been demolished.

Like the Nepalese monarchy, it is a thing of the past.

Nepal to lift ban on import of Chinese milk products

The Nepali government is to lift the five-month long ban on the import of Chinese milk products after an international laboratory found that samples collected from different outlets in the country tested negative for melamine, local media reported on Friday.

The government had imposed a ban on imports of milk products from China on Sept. 24 last year after at least four toddlers died in China and thousands fell ill due to melamine contamination in baby formula and milk products.

On the recommendation of the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC), Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank of the country, had directed all banks not to issue Letters of Creditfor the importing of Chinese milk products and baby formula.

"We will soon ease the ban on the import of Chinese milk products as the samples collected here were found melamine-free," Jeevan Prabha Lama, deputy director general of the Department toldmyrepublica.com on Friday.

Lama said import will be allowed only after conducting a test of items being imported. About 35 firms import Chinese milk products.

The DFTQC had a few months ago sent about one and a half dozen samples of Chinese milk products including chocolates, biscuits and toffees to the SDS laboratory in South India for chemical test and content analysis.

Meanwhile, the government has imported latest test equipment from Singapore's Romer Laboratory in a bid to upgrade the laboratory of the DFTQC for conducting sophisticated tests.

Police in Dhanusa said that sister-in-law Lalita Devi hired men for Rs 150,000 to kill journalist Uma Singh 19 days ago.

During a press conference on Thursday, police said that the murder is linked to family dispute over ownership of properties. Three of the accused were made public on the occasion. They include Lalita, her son Abhishek Singh, and local Maoist leader Shrawan Yadav.

Superintendent of Police Yadav Raj Khanal said Lalita admitted her involvement in the killing during the interrogation. Lalita had hired the group after her mother-in-law transferred two katthas of land to Uma's ownership. Lalita had threatened mother-in-law and Uma.

Lalita had revealed this arrangement in a telephone conversation with her son Abhishek, who was living with his uncle in Sitamadi, India, a few months before Uma's murder. Lalita hatched the conspiracy with the help of Swamiji alias Umesh Gohiwar Yadav of the Tarai Ekata Parishad. Yadav had received Rs 25,000 as the first installment.

Khanal said the murder was linked to as far as Bihar and a police team was planning to go to Bihar in a bid to chase Swamiji and his gang members who are reportedly hiding there.

The government Thursday stopped Bollywood movie Chandni Chowk To China (CC2C) from screening in the cinema halls across the country as protests continued against the flick that fabricated that Lord Buddha was born in India.

Film distributors Wednesday decided to ban the film as they were haunted by violence that flared up in 2000 with Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan making negative remarks against Nepal.

Cinama halls like Jai Nepal, Kumari, Gopi Krishna Movies, Barahi Movies, Guna Cinema and Ashta Narayan cinema dropped showing the Akshay Kumar-Deepika Padukone starrer. Instead they began screening Ghajini.

Students around the capital continued with their protest programmes today chanting the slogan "Buddha was born in Nepal, learn to respect Nepal’s identity and sovereignty." Enraged students had already torn off the posters of the movie at Jai Nepal cinema. They also said that its CDs and VCDs that have begun circulating here still contain the offending dialogue.

Before being released in Nepal Friday, CC2C was viewed by Nepal’s censor board who objected to the dialogue. Subsequently, the distributors deleted it.

Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara said that the film that created a controversy on Buddha’s birth had been banned and appealed for the similar move around the world.

The head of the Nepal Film Directors’ Association K. P. Pathak urged the audiences to boycott all foreign films that give wrong message.

Buddha was born as prince Siddhartha in Lumbini in south Nepal in 623 BC. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit Lumbini every year to pay their homage to the apostle of peace.

Agencies stated that controversy has also created bad blood between the Nepalese and Indians on YouTube with messages becoming abusive.

CC2C is the first Hindi film that has been shot in China. It is directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Sippy Films as well as Warner Brothers.

History Writing In Nepal by Dr. Dinesh C.Regmi

The modern concept of history, however, does not limit itself to collecting facts and assembling them in a chronological order. The collection of materials is to be made from a quite reasonable and dependable source before a historian establishes a historical fact which is useful for the past of which he is writing. A modern historian uses reasonable facts along with logical interpretation. Understanding of the life and problems of the people in the past is the main objective of history.

Objectivity

The first account of Nepal’s past and contemporary politics and commercial potentialities was published in England by Colonel Kirkpatrick in 1811, who had headed a commercial (and political) mission of the British East India Company in 1792. His book included geography, mode of production, and military strategy that was badly needed to imperialists before they could take further action against a country, hitherto unknown.

Nepal, after the conquest of Kathmandu Valley by Gorkhalis in 1768-69, was in the process of political unification at that time. The Kingdom included whole of the eastern Terai, eastern and central inner Tarai in addition to the eastern hill region extending up to the Tista river and western hill region up to Jajarkot in 1775, when Prithvi Narayan Shah died. Its frontier reached as far as Kumaun across the Mahakali river in the west in 1790. Since his successors were either short-lived or weak or even infant, the State authority was vested on Regents who were engaged in palace intrigues. There was the British Residency in Kathmandu since 1791 to report the palace affairs, follow the orders of its superiors from India and to interfere in domestic affairs from time to time. These facts and events have been unilaterally interpreted in the Europeans’ works of the nineteenth century.

Both Nepal and the East India Company were expanding their territories in order to gain political and economic power. In 1808, the Gorkhali army had crossed the Jamuna river and reached Kangra where their common interests clashed. While fighting against the native rulers there Nepal had to face the force of the East India Company during 1814-16, just three years after the publication of Kirkpatrick’s work. Consequently, Nepal had to sign the Sagauli Treaty that led to the loss of the hot territory in the western Tarai that was subjugated earlier from the native rulers and to permit the British Residency to run in Kathmandu.

Nevertheless, the ruling elite tried but failed from time and again to expel the British Residency out of Nepal. The British attitude towards Nepal can well be understood by the reply of General Ochterlony that "You (Nepal) must take either a Resident or war" on to the complaint of the discourtesy shown to Nepali king by the Resident.

Kirkpatrick was followed by Francis Hamilton in 1819, two years after the Sugauli Treaty was signed. Since Nepal had already lost the western Tarai, Hamilton concentrated his account on the hill principalities such as the Baisi and Chaubisi in the west and the Sen principality in the east. Other prominent Western authors on Nepal of that century included Resident B. H. Hodgson (between1830 and l880), Assistant Resident H. A. Oldfield (1880) and Daniel Wright (1877). Their objectives of writing history based on their own observation and convenient interpretation especially for the contemporary period could be understood. The contributions made by these writers to developing the relations between Nepal and the East India Company which ultimately determined the course of history of Nepal during that period are quite obvious. As to the account of ancient past they initiated the practice of using the Vamshavalis, which persisted among the historians.

In India, a number of theses on Indian history were published by the British historians till the nineteenth century concluding that the Indians did not have a sense of nationality and political speculation. Indian scholars accepted all this as a challenge of the imperialist ideology and attempted to falsify that by writing history in the line of nationalist ideology. The publication of the Arthashastra of Kautalya in 1909 and the Hindu Polity by K. P. Jayaswal in l924 led this ideology to its zenith.

No wonder if the Indian scholars since the twentieth century had been expressing their own nationalistic views while referring to the history of such frontier states as Nepal. K. P. Jayaswal (1936), R.G. Basak (1934) R.C. Majumdar (between 1931 and 1959) and others were the Indian historians who commented on Nepali history particularly in its ancient phase without exploring the local material available to them. However, the only European historian of the time (l905-8) was Sylvain Levi who explored materials also from Tibet and interpreted that it was not India but Tibet which exerted political influences on Nepal from time to time in ancient period.

The Nepalis came forward to write their own history only after 1951. This was undoubtedly a remarkable time for the discovery of source materials, including inscriptions and documents of different historical periods. The Itihas Samshodhan Mandal not only made attempts to interpret original source materials but also pinpointed errors committed by former history writers in date, names and personal relationship.

In spite of all this, predilection for national pride and glory of the past reflects on various history books by Nepali writers. They still use the medieval Vamshavalis in order to show the antiquity of Indo-Aryan culture in Kathmandu Valley. One wonders how an archaeologist reacts if a noted historian claims to write an "authentic history of the pre-and proto historic period"...even in the absence of archaeological exploration by taking help ‘of Vamsavali’ and declares: "when epigraphy fails, Vamsavali prevails in Nepal." There is no evidence that there existed any oral literature that might have been transmitted from generation to generation in Nepal. In fact, one does not find any material culture or dependable primary evidence of the period prior to the fifth century AD.

Commendable

However, a few publications since 1970s have shown a commendable change in the trend of history writing in Nepal. These include collections of ancient inscriptions and medieval documents with valuable comments, and some volumes of economic, social and paleographic history. Let us hope that the new approach to the history must continue.

where was Buddha born?
The straight answer to this question is absolutely 'yes, in present Nepal's Lumbini'. The Lumbini Ashokan inscription is the evidence. Alongside the Lumbini garden; are Bodha Gaya in Bihar, Kushinagar, [Kshauvati in Jatak Katha, the Capital City of Malla] in Utter Pradesh and Sarnath, also in Utter Pradesh. These are the other Buddhist holiest places in the Indian Subcontinent closely related to life and death of the Buddha. Bodh Gaya and Kushinagar are near Nepal border whereas Saranath [also called Isipatana in Pali Canon, is near Vanaras] in Uttar Pradesh. Being in the proximity of Lumbini, these holiest sites also offer themselves as another proof that Buddha was born here in Nepal's Lumbini. If the Buddha were born in Orissa or somewhere else, these kinds of holy sites would have also certainly been near Orissa or somewhere else by some different names.

The Buddha came to this world, obtained enlightenment, preached his 'dharma' and died in those four different holy places. Except for those four different places, he does not seem to have visited some other places in his life. So there should be no question at all whether the Buddha was born in Orissa or had ever visited it. It is therefore relevant to put here the widely acclaimed native Orrisa historian Prof. Karuna Sagar Behera's view in this connection.

Prof. Behera said, "The Buddha was neither born in Orissa nor visited the place during his lifetime." 36, But he added that Orrisa contributed immensely to the growth and development of Buddhism in the Indian sub-continent. Keeping in view, the paramount historical and religious importance, of these four holiest Buddhist pilgrimages, concerned governments should always endeavour to preserve them and develop for tourism and education also. These governments should also keep close eyes on school curricula exclusively on matters relating to the birth place of the Buddha so that coming generations would receive correct information and no chances would be left wide open for any kind of antagonism between the peoples of these two neighbouring countries.

Additionally at the end, there were no boundaries that we have today in between Nepal and India when the Buddha was born. We do not know for sure whether these two countrynames ever existed then. Here is a quote from George Curzon, former Viceroy of India but earlier a geographer who trekked through the Pamirs and wrote a book about it: "The idea of a demarcated frontier is itself an essentially modern conception which finds little or no place in the ancient world." 37

And, Prof. Michael Witzel 38 of Harvard University says, "Between 1816 and 1864, the Buddha was born, at Lumbini (Rummindei), in British India. Before and after that date: in Nepal"

Each year new batch of students reach their final year of schooling to give their SLC exam.

It is known as the "iron gate". Every year they study to pass their most awaited slc exam.

Also SLC is famous for the cheating environment and one can look papers of any one of his/her room. Anyways it is of the national standard and we must respect the SLC

This time SLC exam is to take place from chaitra 12 , march 25 in english date. Almost the course of the exam have been finished by all the schools and may are giving special coaching to improve their students performance in this "iron gate".From last year onwards the government has been holding SLC in a new format, including the syllabus only of class ten as against syllabus of both class 9 and 10 in previous years. The new batch of students should feel themselves lucky to give exams from just one year of study compared to 2 years of before batches. So last year there was a record in the pass percentage. Creating a new record with the highest ever pass percentage in the entire 74-year long history of the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination, a total of 195,689 out of 307,078 regular students passed the examination held from March 17 to 27 this year. The pass percentage this time was 63.73. This is 5.09 per cent higher than the ‘record’ last year.

All you SLC students do not panic for the exams. Treat it just like any other normal exams but do not ignore it because it is of national level and it is recognized al over the country. Without passing SLC you are no where to go.

At least one hour of reading is needed. As to pass SLC only the main 5 subjects is enough give special care in them. they are nepali, english, math, social and science. For maths and opt books of nb khatako and dr simkhada are good. All you slc takers best of luck. May all you get passed on this "iron gate".

TV presenter Indra Lohani passes away

Noted TV presenter and advocate Indra Lohani died of cardiac arrest in Kathmandu Friday evening.

Lohani, 45, was rushed to Norvic Hospital in Thapathali from his residence in Baneshwor after he complained of chest pain. He was declared dead at 7.30 pm. According to the Norvic source, he passed away en route to the hospital.

An advocate by profession, Lohani got popularity with the TV talk show, Bahas, he hosted.

The Bahas was first aired from the state-owned Nepal Televsion.

At present, his talk-show with the name 'Kantipur Bahas' is telecast by Kantipur Television.

Former secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association Lohani is survived by his wife and two daughters.

First Bird Flu outbreak in Nepal KATHMANDU, Jan 16

The government confirmed on Friday the outbreak of Bird Flu (H5N1) virus in the Himalayan country.

The tests done in Nepal Central Veterinary Laboratory and UK’s OIE Reference Laboratory, Weybridge detected the avian virus in six out of every seven chicken brought from Mechi Municipality-10 quarantine office in Kakadbhitta, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives said in a press release.

The Cabinet has declared the area within the range of three kilometres from the quarantine office “Bird Flu Emergency Area”.

The government took the decision as per the Natural Calamity (Relief) Act 2039 BS.

The Emergency Area include the areas within Mechi River in the east, Mechinagar Municipality building in the west, Nakkalbanda in the north and Shatighatta in the south.

As per the government decision, all the birds, avian-related substances, materials for poultry production and other concerning equipment, except those which can be sterilised, will be destroyed.

Nobody will be allowed to carry out to farm, transfer, produce, refine, sell, purchase and consume poultry-related materials until the Emergency Area declaration is withdrawn.

The rightful owners of the fowls and concerning materials, if destroyed, will be compensated as per the Bird Flu Control Decree 2064.

Informing about initiating immediate action to control and wipe out the outbreak, the Ministry said it has preliminarily estimated that the virus can be eliminated within one month from the Emergency Area.

The Department of Livestock Services has been directed to arrange active surveillance at the areas ranging 10 kms from Kakarbhitta to prevent the bird flu from spreading, Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara said.

Nepal had managed to remain unscathed by the avian virus even after it was traced in neighbouring villages of India.

Are Rautes Nepal´s King Kong?

A supposed interaction with Rautes at Nepal Tourism Board this week reminded this reporter of the 2005 movie King Kong. In the movie, directed by Hollywood´s top league director Peter Jackson, a struggling filmmaker, played by Jack Black, stumbles across a giant gorilla on an island. Sensing the financial possibilities he traps the beast, chains and brings it to New York, and showcases it to the public for a fee. But things go wrong after the gorilla stops enjoying being a showpiece and breaks free, creating havoc in the city.

It would be wrong to assume the organizers of the ´Raute trip to Kathmandu´ had a motive similar to the character played by Black´s. But brief utterances by Raute leader Ain Bahadur Shahi during the interaction proved the organizers were guilty of two things.

1. The Rautes were forcibly made a spectacle of at the interaction, where they could neither understand, nor contribute to heated debates in which the likes of Dr Krishna Bahadur Bhattachan participated with great pleasure and enthusiasm.

Discussions bored the Rautes to such an extent that Shahi intervened at one point. “Enough. I understand what is going on. I understand what you are doing. I am leaving,” said Shahi, who looked sleepy and lost throughout the discussion. He was about to leave the venue when one of the organizers stopped him. And so he remained. Did he have any other choice in a city so crowded with strangers and concrete he wasn’t used to and couldn’t understand? The Rautes are obviously unused to such discussions, and the city way of life. Three years ago, Raute chieftain Man Bahadur Shahi died after falling ill owing to bus travels during his Kathmandu visit.

2. The Rautes were obviously lured to Kathmandu with the promise that all they had to do was put up with a few shows for which they would be financially rewarded.

When asked to utter what he wanted, Shahi said, “Rice loses its taste if you chew it too much. Why talk so much? I have already done a lot (of shows). Now give me my reward.”

It is strange Contemporary Vision Pvt. Ltd., an organization which has been working to protect the Rautes’ rights for two years and was constantly reminding participants at the interaction to respect their rights, made false promises to the Rautes and showcased them as if they were beasts.

The media’s treatment of the Rautes was also objectionable. In its report on the Rautes published on Thursday, the Kantipur daily was making fun of the nomads by focusing on their ignorance and lack of eating etiquette. The most indigestible part of the report was the mention that during their visit to the national zoo on Wednesday, people looked more at the Rautes than they did at the zoo animals. Does that imply that the Rautes are more amusing creatures than zoo animals?

Another dimension of the advocacy for the rights of Rautes, which I have mentioned in a separate story published on the news site and cannot keep from mentioning once again, is the definition of Rautes´ rights. Contemporary Vision maintains Rautes must not be mainstreamed into regular society as doing that would mean denying them their cultural rights.

Isn´t that imposition? Shouldn´t the Rautes rather be explained the benefits of living in a regular society and allowed to choose for themselves? What will Contemporary Vision do if, one day, the Rautes finally say they want to quit their nomadic lifestyle and settle down? Will Contemporary Vision allow them to do that or prevent them in the name of protecting their cultural rights?

nepali bands concert

Some of the best bands of the Nepali music industry joined hands to promote peace among the youth through the concert themed “Youth against Violence” at Bhrikuti Mandap on Saturday. Bands like Mukti n Revival, Robin and the New Revolution, the Shadows, Hari Maharjan Project and Vhumi showcased their talent to dissuade the youth from taking up violence.

Underground outfit Vhumi started the gig with some of their originals including “Bhariya” and “Stoned Hunter”. Then came the Hari Maharjan Project, a trio of Haris on guitar, Rizzu on bass and Daniel on the drums, playing the instrumental compositions of Hari. Their music was certainly new to the regular concert goers and was well received. The Shadows were on next playing their originals. The band was tight in its performance and got the audience to sing along. They played their originals from their previous as well as new albums: “Prakriti” and “Hidne maanchhe ladchha” being the most famous among them.

The crowd raised a commotion when Robin and the New Revolution took to the stage. Robin's charisma and the band's neat performance made the crowd go wild and the level of excitement was rising with each note. They played songs from Robin's old albums with Looza and also songs composed with the Revolution. Addressing the cause behind the concert during his performance,Robin sang some of his songs with social messages like “Keta Keti” and “Nepal”. To end their set, the band played their rendition of the hit Bollywood song “Dum Maaro Dum”.

Robin invited Mukti n Revival to perform next, introducing the front man Mukti Shakya as his old friend and inspiration. When the band entered the stage, the audience could not hold its excitement as all screamed with excitement seeing the band onstage after a long hiatus. Mukti did not start right away but took some time to introduce the organisers Ranav, Samik and Aavas, while also explaining the importance of abandoning violence. He praised the organisers for their effort and the successful show they had managed to put up.

he band started with Shiva Anthem, their instrumental tribute to Lord Shiva, followed by their socially influenced number “Dekhdaichhu Ma” from their latest album of the same name. They followed it up with a few other numbers from the same album.

The concert saw huge participation of youngsters. Meanwhile, a petition signing programme was also held on the occasion. The audience members signed a big spread of cloth which called for youngsters to resist from burning tyres during protests.

16 hrs daily load-shedding from Sunday

Nepalis will have to bear the brunt of 16 hrs load-shedding a day with effect from Sunday.

“On Sunday, we will increase load shedding from the current 12 hours to 16 hours a day,” Sher Singh Bhat, director of Systems Operations Department, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), told .

Bhat said this schedule will apply in most parts of the country including Kathmandu and other major towns – Biratnagar, Pokhara, and Butwal.

As per the new schedule, the NEA will cut power for 16 hours a day for six days a week and 12 hours on one particular day in the week in these areas. Thus, the power outage will be increased to 108 hours a week starting Sunday.

Load-shedding schedule will be locally set in Hetauda-Birgunj area and in some districts in the western parts of the country. Power outage in Hetauda-Birgunj area would be about 84 hours a week (12 hours a day), he said.

In some western districts it could be around 40 hours a week. In western Nepal, the NEA had recently decreased load-shedding duration to 25 hours a week after receiving 20 MW electricity from India.

The 70 MW Middle Marsyangdi hydropower project, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal last month, has failed to generate electricity so far due to technical problems. Bhat said it will take at least two more weeks to bring one of the two units of the project into operation. Operation of another unit will take a couple of weeks more, he said.

Many industrial entities in the country have either cut production or closed down altogether citing acute power shortage in recent days. Nepali television stations that were broadcasting round-the-clock decided on Thursday to cut broadcast time by five hours every day.

The government last month declared national power crisis in the country.

The NEA said it had to increase load-shedding due to receding water levels in the rivers. All the hydro power projects in operation in the country, except Kulekhani, are run-of-the-river projects. Water level in Kulekhani, the only storage-type projects, is at its lowest.

Forensic lab (NAFOL, nepal)to upgrade DNA test services

Two years after its establishment, the only DNA testing facility in Nepal is all set get an upgrade to genetic profiling from its present DNA parentage testing facility.
While DNA parentage testing is done from fresh blood samples to identify the parentage of any individual, genetic profiling provides analysis of DNA from samples of body tissues or fluids to identify individuals.
The latest facility, which is going to be launched in the next fiscal year, will be helpful in the identification of missing individuals.
The National Planning Commission last month approved the proposal by the National Forensic Science Laboratory (NAFOL) to extend the facility for which it has already earmarked a budget of Rs 6 million.
"The lab was not able to carry out genetic profiling because of lack of expensive equipment, but now that the government has approved Rs 6 million budget for this, we will begin the service from the coming fiscal year," said Bhinu Shova Tuladhar, executive director of the laboratory.
"Equipment for extraction of human DNA from bones, Nitrogen Freezer Mill, Rota Incubator, devices to quantify the DNA, Real Time PCR and other equipment are required for the tests and we are all set to invite tender bids to purchase the equipment," Tuladhar added.
Lack of genetic profiling facility in the country had prevented authorities concerned from identifying exhumed bodies through scientific tests. In such cases, the samples used to be sent to foreign countries till now. Now the cost for such a test is expected to be much cheaper. The laboratory said it would further extend its service of DNA profiling by introducing newer technologies.
