All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) appointed English coach Graham Roberts as the new coach for Nepali national football team.

According to an ANFA source, Roberts will look after Nepali team in the upcoming AFC Challenge Cup Group stage matches scheduled to be held in Kathmandu from the second week of April. Roberts has arrived Kathmandu on Friday.


ANFA had appointed Upendra Man Singh and Megh Raj KC in the coaching panel for the national team under the leadership of Krishna Thapa early in January. ANFA has called in 48 players nominated by Thapa for the closed camp training.

The ANFA source claimed that Thapa would also be in the new coaching team under the leadership of Roberts. "Thapa will be there as a coaching staff. There will be four coaches for the national team preparing for the Challenge Cup," said the source.

ANFA has picked Roberts from among five foreign coaches interested for the job. According to the ANFA sources, Roberts will get a monthly salary of $5000 and $500 for his petty expenses.

The former English national team player was looking after Pakistan team recently. Roberts had joined Pakistan in 2010 as an assistant coach and later took full-fledged duty as the coach.

The 51-year old from Southampton had played for English Premier League clubs Tottenham and Chelsea (when they were in championship) and Scottish Club Rangers.


Roberts was the team member when Tottenham won the FA Cup titles in 1981 and 1982 as well as UEFA Cup in 1984. Roberts was a stubborn defender in the team but had scored against Anderlecht in the UEFA Cup final. He had won six caps for the England national team.

He was also in the Ranger´s squad that won Scottish League and League Cup titles in 1986. Likewise, he was an important member of Chelsea when they won the championship (2nd division) in 1988-89. He had ended his playing career with West Bromwich.

Roberts had started his coaching career with Scottish Club Clyde in 2005. Clyde had defeated giant Celtic under his coaching but later in 2006 Clyde had sacked him.
