Ganga Bahadur Thapa, the first Nepalese athlete to participate in the Olympics, breathed his last at the age of 84 on Tuesday. He died while undergoing treatment at Model Hospital in Kathmandu due to several health complications. He was reportedly suffering from high-blood pressure for a long time.
Thapa had led the Nepali contingent in 1964 Olympics Japan for the marathon category along with fellow Athlete Bhupendra Silwal. Three Nepali boxers, Nam Singh Thapa, Ram P. Gurung and Bhim Bahadur Thapa had also participated in the 18th Olympic games from Nepal.It is reported that Thapa’s body has been kept at the premises of the National Sports Council for final condolences.Thapa was the first sportsperson to mark the nation’s participation in the Olympics in 1964.
